Hey Zac, How does Gary Hooker set his Z-28? He usually sets it for as clean a signal as possible. Volume all the way up, bass up a little over half way, and treble about a third of the way up. Zac Is this with a 5751 in the phase inverter slot? With my Z28 through a 2x12 cab with lead 80's it's a little dirty with those settings. Thanks Zac

Zac - I couldn't have done it without you and all the hours we spent! Chad is STILL going over tons of notes and trying to recall all the things you told him before he stepped into your shoes on the road.
A few months back I also "re-did" Gary's KT-45.

Zac, I recently ordered a Maz 18 Jr. NR 2x10 Combo, and am patiently waiting for it to come in. This will be my first tube amp. Do the Dr. Z Amps come with a manual? I feel I have so much to learn. Thanks.

Zac, a week or so ago lefty posted some clips of brad playing through the stingray. On the second one he plays with some reverb. I thought he didn't use it, but does he live or in the studio? And what reverb pedal is he using? Thanks alot Nick

I was at his house when he recorded some clips of the Stingray. For the dry tracks, he plugged straight into the amp. The verb should have come from a Boss RV-5 pedal that he has in his rack. He does use it live. In the studio, reverb is added during the mixing stage. Zac

Hello Zac -
First of all, let me say thanks for taking time to post here. It's really great to get your perspective.
Elsewhere on this board I started a thread asking for opinions on the Line6 Variax guitar. I had been pretty skeptical of it probably for the same reasons a lot of other people are, but recently I heard someone use one in a live setting and it sounded pretty darn interesting. I was just wondering if you've had any personal experience with them, and/or if you know of any players using them in pro circles, and what your and their impressions are. I wouldn't ever expect it to replace a nice "real" guitar, but I'm curious as to whether these things are toys or viable tools. Thanks!

IMO, and that of so many others, they are a really cool toy. It's like modelling amps. It's kinda fun to play around with them and say, " Geez, guys listen to what they think a '68 Plexi should sound like!....or this isn't bad...they've got the Vox AC-15 emulated pretty good!" Then what happens is you plug a real Tele ( or whatever) into a real old AC -15, and you go " Holy crap...this is the real deal...this sounds incredible!" And that's when emulation becomes 'still cool'...but with a lot less magic!! Never worry about being all things to all people. Find YOUR guitar and play it like YOU.

Its a great tool when you need to cover a lot of bases with very little gear. If you had to do a fly date with a very wide variety of music, you could cover alot with that guitar and a podxt live. I still prefer my Tele's and Z's....Zac

Hi Zac...You helped me out greatly on the Boss DD-2 settings, thank you! I noticed Keeley has a modded DD-3. Do you think the Keeley modded DD-3 is worth changing to? Thanks.

I asked him awhile back what settings Brad P. uses on the DD-2...he responded with:
Hi Brian, On the DD-2, the standard setting is: E-level at 9:45, Feedback off, Delay time at 3:15, and mode at M. 200ms.
Zac ...and it is dead on.

Brad sometimes uses a pod to practice with, but he has not used one live, or to record with in a while. The TS-5 is a great pedal without any mods. It can do the job fine. You don't need a vintage 808. On the song you mentioned, its a tele, a Z, a TS-9, and a delay. Zac

Hey Zac, has Brad changed anything as far as hardware goes to his 1968 pink paisley to replace original? frets, bridge, anything? Thanks Zac Some of the tuners, and frets(dunlop 6105) have been replaced. I removed the original control plate. He wanted to change to 250k pots from the original 1meg. I put in a whole new plate to preserve the original wiring, and so if he wanted to go back, it could be done quickly. Zac

I have not tried out the modded DD-3, but it is very intriguing. I am a fan of delay with modulation only on the repeats. Like the deluxe memory man. The loop would allow you to do that by adding a chorus pedal to the loop. If you are wanting to do more atmospheric playing, it would be very cool. The DD-2 is hard to beat for a nice quick slap back though. Zac

Hey Zac does Brad use his keeley compressor? if he does what are the settings on that bad boy. My second question might be a little more diffucult. I am thanking about purchasing me a Z. But unlike you and Brad i cannot afford 100 of those bad boys. But i have narrowed it down to the RX ES and the StingRay. I was wondering which of the two would be able to nail down the tone overall, for i know he uses all different kinds. THough i probably couldn't go wrong with niether

THough i probably couldn't go wrong with niether Brad has just started using the 4 knob keeley compressor. Settings are not in stone yet though. On the amp front, I love both amps, but I would make my choice partially on what size venues you are playing, and by what tone you are looking for. The Stingray is slightly lower in wattage, and does the vox thing. The RX ES has a "wider" sound, and is louder than the Stingray. You really can't go wrong with either one though. Zac
