Hey Zac, I was watching "Mud on the Lens" last night...BP of course, has killer tone and chops, a very enjoyable DVD...a must see for Dr Z aficionados. His sig sound is BIG, dark, punchy and compressed. Seeing as how the RxES is so bright (I have one), can you shed some light on Brads amp settings, etc to acheive that tone? I'm assuming a good contributor to it are the Weber 50w ALNiCO's. Thanks

I think having an "Ask Zac" post in here would be cool.
copied from a post that I did later here....
I think I am going to sticky this post to the top as Zac probably has more hours with Z amps than anybody other than the Doctor. I mean after all .... maybe 200+ night a year on tour with Z amps and countless hours in the studio. He looked after all of Brad Paisley's amps and Gary Hooker's amps .... and his own amps .... and was on stage in many shows playing his own Z amps with the Paisley band.
He writes the "Ask Zac" column in Vintage Guitar Magazine too.
And best of all, he doesn't even get paid for being in here!
Keep in mind that Zac is a pretty busy fellow so he might not get to these questions ultra fast so please be patient.

Myles, all those stars and admin?? You've moved up ;D
I think we should have 3 rooms:
-Ask Dr Z -Ask Myles -Ask Zac
Probably a few others, seeing some of the "heavy hitters" who've been showing up in here.

Actually, Lefty asked me if I could help with the forum if there were issues that needed to be addressed. The moderators and administrators here want to keep this forum nicely done and wanted to make sure there was usually somebody around to help if needed. If you look at some other forums, there can be some jerk post on there for weeks before it is ever addressed. So in the end this was just trying to assure that somebody would be around to help as often as possible.

The Webers do darken the tone alot. Higher powered alnico speakers have more low end and compression than say a vox blue. The ES RX is usually set with all of the controls set at noon, then adjusted according to the room. The Maz 38 is sometimes compressed, sometimes not. Its controls vary more. The key to that amp is the cut control. Thanks, Zac

Thanks Zac, very interesting. I also noticed on the DVD Brad doesn't spend much time at the pedal board. Does he normally keep the overdose switch on?
Also the McVay G bender really has my attention all of a sudden. Nice clean look.

Also the McVay G bender really has my attention all of a sudden. Nice clean look. It will be interesting to see what Zac says here ..... maybe it is not a standard answer but ..... what I observed at a show was ..... Brad is wireless and all over the stage. He has a great time interacting with the audience and he does not just blow off his fans during a show. What I am saying here is that if Brad is at one end of the stage and working with a group in the audience there could be a tone changeup coming soon. But .... rather than turn away from his fans or somebody in the group he may be working with at that moment in a fit of creative energy or whatever .... there was Zac. Zac was a very interactive part of the show and I will leave it to Zac to explain as this might be a "Paisley trade secret".

FWIW, I think an Ask Zac room would be great here --- as would, without question, an Ask Myles room. I've posted questions and have received answers from both of you guys on other forums, and it is so generous of you to share your expertise with us, despite your busy schedules. I regard you guys as industry experts (if you can use such an uncool "business" term like that for something as cool as Dr. Z amps), and your presence here is appreciated. Hats off to you guys.

Thank you for the support. I think that having the Doc here and Zac here are to great resources and viewpoints. I hope that as this forum grows there will be many people that will lend help and advice. I will always be happy to assist in any way I can for the folks here but I don't want to really see a bunch of sticky'd topics with Ask the Doc, Ask Zac, Ask Manny Moe and Jack, etc. I think that these two guys are super and the Ask Zac is sort of nice as it plays on Zac's VG Mag series. If I can help please let me know. For people in So Cal my door is always open (evenings and weekends for visits). I will always be happy to perform free checkups on Dr. Z amps as well as free bias adjustments on the Class A/B amps. If I do not like your phase inverter I will give you a new one with the bias adjustment.

Moving forward , Brad mentions he uses Fralins in his Crooks Teles. Would they by chance be the Blues Specials?

1. I was changing his patches on his ground control unit from offstage. There were two boards, one for him, and one for me. He leaves the overdose off untill the encore. The McVay benders are great! 2. Brad uses fralin blues specials, and some voo doo pickups, and Hamels in the 57/52 tele.
Thanks for the kind words, Zac

Thanks Zac. I just got back from Lindy's a couple hours ago, where he and Tyler confirmed Brad uses the Blues Special bridge...so I picked one up. Tyler said he wound a bunch of blues going to Crooks guitars, presumably for BP.

I did not want to say anything as I thought it might be a "trade secret". But .... for those others reading this post .... I think Zac really over simplified things here. At one show at the Kodak Theater (where they do the Academy Awards) I watched Zac take care of two guitar players on stage at the same time (with guitar changes every song) but then do Brad's patch changes during songs. I am not talking a change or two but MANY changes, sometimes two of them in a single measure. Zac was like a mad juggler. I don't see how the guy did it since I had been working with him since about eight that morning and Lord knows what time Zac really woke up on that day! I do know I got to sleep about 2am and Zac probably was not sleeping yet at that time. Then you have to remember that Zac did this for maybe 200+ shows per year. I could not have pulled off this sort of workload when I was 19! Zac not only supported the show but was in the show at the same time. Zac .... you are way too modest! While I am on a rant .... Zac is also a killer player in his own right and a master in the studio.

"I was changing his patches on his ground control unit from offstage. There were two boards, one for him, and one for me."Sounds like you're definitely "in the know." Can you divulge what delay BP used on the Good Morning America program and how it was used. Thank you.

Does anyone here know if he has a recorded body of work we can check out? You will have to ask Zac this one. He was on TV in Vegas for some big country awards show ... I do not recall which one, I loose track. You can also hear him during sound check at past Paisley concerts! ;D There is a really cool picture that I am not allowed to post with Brad Paisley, Zac and James Burton together. I cannot post it or show it as it is going to be in some book or publication or something. Yes ... Zac is a pretty cool player and does a lot of session work in Nashville.

Brad knows the Ghias too and loves them but he does have a heck of a sense of humor so may love seeing a shirt like this. Zac by the way has a 2x12 Ghia combo ... not too many of those around. It might be Brad's but I think it is Zac's.

Its mine, and the good Doc said it was the first Ghia 2-12 combo he ever made. Mine has celestion blues for what its worth. As far as where to hear me, I have only played on demos and custom projects. The only other instance are the Opry TV performances I have done with Brad. I have never played on a master recording session. I have only engineered on master sessions. Zac

Hi Madison...It's the pickup combo as well, a Lindy Fralin Blues Special in the bridge, and an Adder neck pickup from APC.
Hey Zac,

Maybe it was an Opry show.
