Hey Zac, I really dig BP's dark crunchy tone -just like the promo soundbyte. I'm running a ES combo w/2 GB's wired for 4 ohms. Could one possibly replicate the frequency curve of his Webers through "creative compression" like a multiband w/ a high cut. Iv'e already swapped all the tubes for NOS Telefunkens(BIG difference) and I use a Hermida Zendrive to dirty things up. Alfonso tells me BP is also using the wonderful Zen also. I don't want to "copy" his tone-just capture the essence of that dark compressed grit. Also using the Keely comp. Any suggestions? Thanks Kerryprotools Brad is using the Zendrive. I said something about it in the post with the pictures of Brad's rig from the 10/1 and 10/2 concert. Gary Hooker also had one as did Erik Halbig and Casey Pollock from Sara Evans.

Zac -
I just subscribed to Vintage Guitar Magazine. Normally we get so many mags here that there is no reason to subscribe but I subscribed to it for one reason alone ..... the Ask Zac column!

Update, Myles, Yes, post the Burton picture. And thanks for the kind words.
Right now I am working up a definative database of what guitars and amps were used on all four of Brad's records. I will post an update here when it gets posted to Brad's website. Zac

Here we are .... Zac in action ..... Three killer players .... Zac Childs, Brad Paisley, and James Burton Here is Zac in his classic pose from an article in Vintage Guitar Magazine. This is the RxES being born in the Dr. Z shop. This is Zac before a show .... please excuse my poor photographic skills and I hope Zac will still talk to me after this one. This is where I tried to get creative in a photographic sense. I asked Zac to "strike the pose" he used for the Vintage Guitar Magazine shoot. I think I came up a bit short on my photog skills yet one more time.

hi zac. i'm playing through a blonde RXES head and i wanted to know what speakers will get me closest to the celestion blue sound? i have a Z 2x12 cab on order(the one made specifically for the RXES available at massstreetmusic.com) and since the celestions blues are only 15 watts each i obvoiusly can't use those two with the RXES. do you reccomend going with a pair of webber alnico's? if so, which ones? keep in mind i want to get as close as i can to that celestion blue tone with out worrying about blowing the speakers.
thanks so much!

That's a 61' Tele custom owned by session guitarist Tom Bukovac.
Brad uses Weber 50watt alnico blue and silver speakers in his ES RX. Zac

Zac is currently on the road with Brad Paisley and Sara Evans doing a feature story on Brad for Vintage Guitar Magazine. He may not be too swift in answering stuff here for the next week or so as he's out on the road again.
Just a heads up for everybody.

Hey now ! Zac's back on the road with BP, great news ! Heck, I might have to go see the State College, PA show in December now. Even though my wife has stated I must limit my Paisley (and SARA EVANS...that's another story) concert going to twice a year, perhaps I can sneak a mid-December show in as a 2006 concert ? Looking forward to another Vintage Guitar article on BP...I got the November 2003 BP issue cover framed & on my wall in the music room. My favorite picker and the lovely Sara together again...this would make the 4th time I've seen them ...what a show folks...you gotta check it out, especially if they duet on "New Again"...tears will flow.

Yes .... Zac was out with Brad, Sara Evans and Sugarland. He was writing a feature cover story for Vintage Guitar Magazine and the timing was perfect for Vintage Guitar from a subscriber standpoint in my case. I normally get my copy of VG at work at GT but they can vanish. I came home one day and in the mail was a card to subscribe to the mag. Since it now has had the "ask Zac" column as well as the Brad Paisley cover story that I did not want to miss, I subscribed for a home copy. Zac sent me a few photos from the road that I will post here. None of Brad but some of the other folks that Zac knows I like alot and those he toured with also. This is Erik Halbig in his classic stance that you see on stage and in lots of Sara Evans videos. He is a killer player and has a great CD and books on his website and on Amazon. On my website on the first main page there are links to Amazon and his website. Another shot of Erik. By the way .... there is a new reality show coming about Tanya Tucker. Look for Erik there as he is the music producer and a player. This is Casey Pollock. He is also one of Sara Evans' guitarists. At the October 1st and 2nd concert Casey did a lead solo at the end of one of Sara's songs using a Zendrive blues pedal. It was one of the most spectacular guitar tones I have heard in years. Some of it was his skill and ability, some his amp and settings, but that pedal was amazing. Casey, Erik, Brad, and Gary Hooker (with Brad) all had one of these. More on these at www.hermidaaudio.com and I will be talking more about this pedal down the road on my website. This is Sugarland. They opened for Sara and Brad. They put on a great show and are getting pretty well known with at least two videos on places like CMT and GAC. Thanks to Zac for the photos! I am looking forward to the article!

What has Erik being using for amps with Sara Evans, and do you happen to know what Compressor he's using? He's got a killer country Tele sound, like on Suds in the bucket.

He has a lot of Bad Cat amps and typically on stage he uses a Bad Cat with 4-10s. He also has Fender BF Bassmans and a number of other amps.

Hi Zac...You mentioned the Johnny Cash tribute show you worked on with Brad in another post, and said he only used the Boss DD-2 for that show as far as effects go. What is the most common, or standard setting you guys use on that pedal? Thanks so much.

The interview should come out mid December. However, things can get pushed back a month.
On the DD-2, the standard setting is: E-level at 9:45, Feedback off, Delay time at 3:15, and mode at M. 200ms.
BTW, Somebody indicated that Z is comming out with 4 new amps soon, that's not true. There is only one planned new amp for the first quarter of 2006.
Hope this helps. Zac

Hey Zac, so Dr Z is going to take 4 of his amps now and switch them to using EL-84's, and then coming out with the new amp using EL-84's? By any chance, do you know roughly how much the new amp is going to cost, rx es price or more? Thanks Zac

Just the new amp with 4 EL84's, as for street price that's up to the Doc. No need to make any changes to some already great amps.
Now for a Q of my own...
Hey Zac, who made Gary's pedalboard?

Lefty is correct. No change to the current amps.
Lefty, Gary's pedalboard I believe was made by Nashville Showcase. Gary had Mark Ferguson of Ferg's amp repair wire it up. Zac

The 68' has a neck that is very typical of late 60's maple cap necks. Slim, but not overly so. Zac

I have an ancient VHS copy that I got from Brad back in 1994. Its a copy from his VHS tape. Its a little grainy after all these years. Every once in a while bootleg copies come up on ebay. I am hoping that NewWest releases it as part of their Austin City Limits series in the future. Zac
