What do you Z Experts think of the JAN-GE 12AX7WA as pre-amp tubes in the Maz 18 NR? I just popped in three of them and I think I like it but I need to crank it up and I cant right now. I think for me its between the Tube Store 7025's and these as my favorites. Anyone else use them in this amp??

I actually found two WA's and one LP in my stash. I'll put the LP in the PI slot...I'll give them a try just for the hell of it, who know??

I've used them , I would say they are a sturdy reliable tube without much "personality". They are a little on the dark side , so that would take care of the piercing highs anyway. Thanks Britinvasion, I think you said everything I wanted to hear to convince me to buy (3) of them...Thanks!!

Members, just wondering if anyone has tried or are using these in this amp or the 38 SR and what your opinion is on them. I'm curious becasue I am just thinking of trying other pre-amp tubes to help give me just a touch more gain, crunch, grit. I have been rolling the JJ's, EH's and Preferred 7025's. So far the EH's are winning for the lowest noise highest gain and having a nice rich non-ear piercing top end. I dont have any Sovteks in my inventory and I dont want to buy them if they are noisy or ear piecing on the top end. Any feedback would be great.

Tested her out tonight as many mentioned, not sure if I can tell a difference a low or high volumes. Maybe just a very touch of smoother tone?? This is a tough one but I guess I am glad I bought it seeing as so many of you have mentioned the NOS rectifier tubes will last forever compare to CP ones.

It won't change the tone , it may possibly change the "feel" a touch. But the hype around NOS rectifier tubes is they last for years , decades sometimes. Newer ones seem to last anywhere from 6 months to , if you're lucky , a few years. Thansk I appreciate the info. I did score a NOS Mullard (Labeled RCA) made in Great Britian 5AR4/GZ34 locally in the original box for 30 bucks...saw them on ebay for 80.00 plus. Tube tested like new so I was told. I'll give her a try tonight.

Will a NOS Mullard rectifier tube really change the tone in a Maz 18 NR? If not, then what is all the hype around an expensive NOS lets Mullard from the late 60s? Is there other reasons to buy and use such a tube???

I myself like the eh's...when you get a solid pair...pretty inconsistent...its those or the 6n14n's for me....I am getting a preferred series 7025 v1 working right now/reg cab amp... along with there 5ar rectifier...which I really like. I have the 7025s in a few darker amps. IMO they seem to be lower gain and bright which is good in some amps like my Jubilee but I would think they will be too thin and bright in this amp but just my opinion. I have the 7025s in mine and wow, they sound great no brite at all! I thought they would be brite and thin also and were the last tubes I rolled in thinking no way and I was so wrong, they sound wonderful and give me just a tou h more clean headroom when she is cranked up. I alos find the TS Preferred Series EL84s to sound great in this amp also very similar to the NOS Russian tubes...oh yeah thats right, these are NOS Russian tubes...

Waiting for a delivery today from The Tube Store for a set of their NOS Perferred Series EL84s and one of their Perferred Series 5AR4s. I figured I had better have a spare set on hand and seeing as this is my first amp with a rectifier tube and EL84s I better get a set just in case plus it will be fun to roll them in and see how they affect the tone. There's Perferred Series are supposed to be very nice and well built tubes. I think I read that the Perferred Series EL84 is the NOS Russian 6n14n tube??

So I have tried many pre-amp tubes in my Maz 18 NR including CP Mullards, NOS RFTs, EH and JJ's. For me I found the JJ's dead sounding missing something, the Mullards had almost too much break up too muddy, the RFT's sounded dam good BUT the EH's sounded the best meaning the lowest noise & a cleaner tone with less harshness in the upper frequencies...I thought I had my set up. But then I got the idea to try some Tube Store 7025's in her. I didnt think they would sound good because the last thing I wanted was for the amp to be brighter and these tubes are typically brighter tubes. Well, I popped them in and wow!!! The amp has yet a bit cleaner tone with less breakup up and the uppers highs seem smoother all while having a rich musical tone not to mention minimal noise. I was so surprised and it was not what I was expecting. If you wonder about my comment on breakup...its because I did install the Brake-Lite and I have a nice choice of OD pedals to use so I can get all the break up from these two areas when needed. Anyone else using The Tube Store 7025's in this amp? Just curious. I haven't tried those tubes but it sounds like it might be a solution for me on another amp. (18 watt 6 v 6 Plexi) Are you using those in all three positions? Yup...

After some experimenting, I am just sticking to the stock rectifier tube. Sounds best at all volumes and I didnt want to risk creating any issues with the additional heat generated that the Doc mentions.

I have a Maz 18 Jr NR and I love it and the more I learn it or it teaches me the more I love it!! I like the clean tone at louder volumes and when I want crunch/dirt I use my OCD or my TS808. What would be the main advantages of a 38 over an 18?? My guess is higher volume headroom???

My Maz 18 NR is the first amp I've ever owned with a rectifier tube and I was wondering how often do you change them. Do they last as long as power tubes or should they be changed more often? Are there signs of a power tube going before it goes? Buy an NOS tube and you will probably never have to replace it. All of the new manufactured rectifiers are a crap shoot in my opinion. If that's the road you choose then always have a spare on hand. OK, what would you recommend?? Whats your thoughts on this one?? www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/5AR4-GZ34-Tube-Types/Sylvania-5AR4-GZ34

Welcome aboard Brian from a neighbor in Buffalo, NY! I too just purchased a Maz 18 Jr NR and love it now that I am figuring this amp out. It sure has a lot to offer and yes, I am still exploring the many tones in her.

Based on my experience with the Maz 18 Jr NR, it most likely all depends on which CP tubes you are using and what NOS tubes you may compare them to. For me, I compared the Russian 6n14n's to the CP Mullard EL84's with the same guitar, volume, amp and amp settings and they sounded very similar...I must be honest, I could not tell a difference. If I had two amps set up the same side by side and A/B'd them maybe I could tell a difference at that point but simply switching tubes and testing one tube at a time, I could not but that's me. So, these two tubes sound very similar to my ears based on my limited testing abilities.

I have always thought about SS frets but never tried them. Do they affect tone at all do they make the guitar tone brighter and/or thinner??

I wonder how much it would cost to get my Les Paul Premium Plus refretted with SS? Being a bound neck with binding over the frets themselves complicates issues too, doesn't it? I have always done all my own work on my guitars but I drew the line at refretting. There's a luthier in the Flint area that builds his own custom guitars, Ron Luczak. Maybe I'll see if he would want to tackle it for me. Thing is, he'd probably have to buy new files when he was done!!! The only down side will be losing the binding nubs at the end of the fret wire which is no big deal but just something to consider. A good Luthier should be able to cut, grind and polish the ends to replicate the ends of the binding nubs.
