Anybody else using their Dr. Z amps with impulse responses? In the best interest of my workflow as a solo recordist in my home studio environment, I recently picked up a Suhr reactive load. As a die-hard in the traditional amp->cab->mic discipline, I am really impressed with the merits of the modern-day amp->RL->IR approach. Hardly new technology at this point (late adopter here), this approach for recording really represents the best of all worlds for me.
For any fellow Z-Talkers using IRs, what are your favorites to pair with your Z amp(s)?
Does anyone know where I can find some great captures of a 1x12 with the Z12? I love the Z12 with my Z-Plus in particular, but haven’t been able to source any IRs for that one as of yet. If anyone can point me in the direction of such a thing, I’d greatly appreciate it!
On a related note, Dr. Z’s speaker cabinets that I’ve used are all fantastic (second to none, IMO)... I’m kind of surprised there aren’t more IR captures of Dr. Z cabs available somewhere already, at least from what I’ve been able to find so far. I’ve seen a few Z-Best captures from Choptones, and there’s also a Z-Best capture that comes with the free version of Tonex (which sounds really good, but Tonex is unbearably bug-laden on my system), but those are the only two Dr. Z cab IR options I’ve come across. It would be really cool/useful someday to have an entire collection of Dr. Z speaker and cab IRs with all the different configurations that have been offered over the years (1x10, 2x10, 4x10, 1x12, 2x12, Z-Best)… Heck, while I’m fantasizing, officially branded/licensed offerings from the mothership would really be a dream come true! (Any thoughts on that, Doc? 😉)

A few years ago, I tried the reactive load box/IR's for live, to cut down on our stage volume. Back then, I settled on the Celestion Blue IR's (from Celestion). But, I think I spent a good 2 weeks of trying different IR's to find one I liked. These days, York Audio seems to be one of the more popular and get a lot of praise on TGP, not only in the modeling section, but also in the live sound/recording section. Ultimately, I found by the time I went through my RL, into an IR, into the board and then back to me through a monitor... My Kemper sounded better, using the same (or similar) amp profile. This is all totally subjective and you may get different results, but I didn't like that setup for live. I also didn't like going down the IR rabbit hole

I'm a fan of speaker IRs especially for home recording. I'm a UA Ox user. The only downside is that their IRs are a closed environment which doesn't provide the opportunity to mess with other IRs with the Ox. I do have a few IRs in my Mac and have run my Z through them. They beat my old Iso speaker box hands down. The secret sauce I've found with the IRs is when you start to add some room mics. That really provides a good feel.
I do have some Dr Z IRs provided by another forum member. They had a good sound. Let me see if I can figure who had them for you.
I have used my UA Ox box for live with good results. Although, I'd still say there's something special about a live open back cab on stage providing a fullness.

Gotta love the search function. Go down this thread ( ztalk.proboards.com/thread/80802/dr-speaker-impulses) to swampstomper's posts with his dropbox site. Note that there's more than one dropbox link since he added some updated ones. I think his IRs are 10's. But, it will give you a taste. Maybe he'll chime in if he's done any more IRs.

I love a real cab live. Working alone in the studio on a mix, hands down IRs let me work in the most enjoyable fashion. I don’t miss tracking with isolation headphones; Much nicer to just work at a reasonable volume through the monitors, hearing clearly and exactly what I’m going to end up with for a given track in the mix.
Thanks for the suggestion/links on the IRs, guys. I already had downloaded the 2x10 Z cab here on the forum (love search), and it sounds good, but I haven’t tried it in a mix yet. Looking forward to that. Also digging the York Audio 4x12 Greenback IR, so they seem like they might be a good source to check out further, too.

I have an Ox Box and a Two Notes Torpedo X that I have used live in a rock band with my Cure and Z-Lux. Both sound very good. The Ox is better sounding, but the portability of the Torpedo X can't be beaten. Two Notes has a wide variety of IRs that can be purchased. The Jeff Stinco 1x12 Oxford IR captured from his '64 Deluxe Reverb is killer! That IR works great with both my Cure and Z-Lux. My other favorite IR is a Suhr 2x12 with G12-65s. That's killer one too. There are so me flavors of sound you can get and many come from famous guitarist like Pete Thorne, Steve Stevens, and others. I would recommend the Two Notes.

It’s almost like you guys are in my head, or monitoring my internet activity or something (wait, you’re not AI are you? 😂)… I have a CAB M+, and I was already JUST yesterday considering purchasing the Jeff Stinco Oxford DynIR as the first add-on since buying the hardware a couple years ago… I figured that might be perfect for the Z-Plus. I landed back at trying out the Two-Notes DynIRs again a couple days ago, after I created this thread. I’ve found some of the ones included with the CAB M+ are really good, and the tweak-ability/workflow of using the DynIRs within the Two-Notes software is fantastic… I think their IR’s sound as good or better than anything else I’ve used, and I find it easier and faster to arrive at the sound I’m looking for than flipping through dozens, if not hundreds of files in a list on an IR loader; Part of that is just that I need to get more familiar with the my library of IRs, but it really is just easy to find something that sounds that sounds right to me from the fantastic cabs in the Two-Notes offerings, and then tweak the mics in the app until they sound right. What I love a bit less is the proprietary nature of using the Two-Notes offerings compared to standard IRs, but I am quickly and easily getting over that part on account the great tones and streamlined workflow. Love the great discussion! I knew I could still count on this place being a gem in the general wasteland that is internet discussion forums these days… LONG LIVE Z-TALK!!! 😀

I have a song writing session today with a long time friend and I'm getting my Therapy out of storage. I'll find a great IR for it too. I'll start with Celetion V-30s and go from there.

I have a song writing session today with a long time friend and I'm getting my Therapy out of storage. I'll find a great IR for it too. I'll start with Celetion V-30s and go from there. V30 is certainly a staple/reference for me, too... Such a useful speaker across a wide variety of amps, cabs, and musical contexts. There’s a Slash Marshall V30 4x12 OPEN back cab I’ve really started digging that came included with the CAB M+ (it wasn’t initially loaded into one of the 32 active slots from the factory, but it’s one of several available cabs it came with unloaded in the background on the device). It’s really great for a more present, open, less compressed tone, with reduced bass response, and it just works great for a ton of things. I really like how IRs really enhance the possibility of finding unique tones from less conventional cab configurations. Another relatively unique one I’ve really been digging lately is a Gretsch 2x12 open back with Jensen C12-PS speakers; It’s a fat, woody sound, with nice sparkle, and a great dynamic breakup, that just feels and sounds amazing.

A short update. I was right about using a cabinet with Vintage 30s IR with the Therapy. But, I got an email from Two Notes introducing the official Jensen 50’s IRs! I have to try some of them!
