a couple of weeks ago, i had put my name on the backorder list at Zzounds for a Celestion Gold speaker, thinking that it won't be here until December. but it arrived at my door step today. i installed it in my JDesign 1x12 cab tonight and plugged it into my AC30CC. i wasn't able to crank it but loud enough to get some impression of the speaker. so i thought i'd post some thoughts in QA format. 1) What did you think? i became cautiously optimistic as soon as i play the first note and liked it more and more as i spent time with it. 2) Does it sound like their Blues? i don't know since i don't own any Blues. i have played Blues in a couple of amps before, enough to tell you that Gold sounds bigger than how i remember Blues to be in those amps. 2) Does it sound like Weber AlNiCo Blue Dogs? i've only played the 30w version of Blue Dog, so i don't know. i remember the 30w Blue Dog to be a little peakier than this. 3) Does it sound like Red Fang OK, this i do have, use, and like. and nope, Gold doens't sound like Red Fang. Gold sounds bigger, fatter, smoother, etc.... i think Red Fang is raunchier sounding speaker while Gold being more refined. Red Fang is also much peakier than Gold. i haven't considered installing Beam Blocker with Gold. i had to use one with Red Fang. 4) Is Gold a loud speaker? yes 5) Is it worth the price? Aren't those other speakers you mentioned above be just as good if not better, especially in terms of $ to performance ratio? only you can determine if it's "worth" it. that's why i bought one for myself. i've been waiting for Celestion to do a higher power version of their Blue. i believe the Webers and the Eminence are great speakers (you all know how much i love Weber products... ). i usually know if i like a piece of gear in the first couple of min and i like Gold a lot. i'll use it on a gig this weekend and report back how it performs out there. there is something else to add but i'll save it for another post later this week.

Ah! I've been waiting for someone to talk about this speaker. I've kept an open back cab especially. Let us know how it goes at the gig and more importantly how it sounds after it has broken in. Pretty exciting really. I wonder how it would sound in the Zbest replacing the V30? Not that I'm gonna mess with my Z best but it might be an interesting pairing although I don't know how it would go in a closed back.

Well, this is an amazing coincidence. I was sitting there watching my video of Big Head Todd and the Monsters and it occurred to me that I hadn't seen or read any reviews of the Celestion Gold yet, although it had reportedly been available for a short while. So I jumped online to post a question about it to this group. mudskipper, you must've been reading my mind. I am also very interested in reading in detail the experiences any of you have with the Celestion Gold, comparisons such as those mudskipper has given, impressions after gigging with the Gold, etc etc. BTW, how much did you pay for it (if you'll pardon the crass question)? Be sure and report back after your gig. Daniel

Oh ... I just ran into this Tone Quest Report review of the Gold: professional.celestion.com/guitar/media/CelestionGoldreview.pdfThey like it. The review begins cautiously as they put the Golds (1x12, 2x12, & 4x12) through the paces with an AC30, AC50, Fender Vibrolux and Fender Pro. But when they combine a pair of Golds with a pair of G12Hs in a 4x12 cab under the Vox AC50 ... holy smoke, I've never seen TQR gush so unabashedly and unequivocally. They apparently love it: "... we have never, ever heard a more joyously thick, rich, intense gusher of high decibel guitar sex ... " Hmm, sounds like an endorsement to me. I think I'll swap out the V30 in my Z open back cab for a Gold to keep the G12H company. Apparently a winning combination. DF

WOW, they REALLY liked it! Since they were talking about how good it sounded in the Avatar 4X12 I wonder if it would equally kick butt in a Z-Best with a G12H30 sittin' next to it. Both are closed back cabs..............

Hmmm...I was considering replacing one of my G12H30s with something else....and since the 45 has some AC50 tones in it....HMMMMM ;D

i'd like to hear it with either Stangray or 'script ES but since i just can't decide/try one to decide, so i have to wait on that. i would also love to compare this and Weber Blue Dog side by side, too.
if i may be a little subjective on this topic for a sec..... it's just a lot of money for a speaker. i paid the full price of 279.95 at Zzounds.com. i usually try to be "economically sensible" about gear because they are tools to me. but i've been wanting *this* (50w version of Blue) for a while, so i sprang for it. based on what i heard preliminary, everything points to it being worth it for me.

i spent some more time with this speaker and i like it better with my plexi clone than my Vox. i'll have to wait for a couple of more gigs, too, but so far it sounded *much* better with the plexi clone. there's some great texture and, surprisingly, eveness to the overall sound.
i'm also using it with another load connected in series to make it 16-ohm. i use a Weber's 8A125, a 30 watt speaker mounted face down in a 1x12 cab.

I think I will pull the trigger if I can find one? I'm thinking I'd like to have one too but it's going to have to wait till next year... I'm real curious about this speaker though. I'd love to try it on my 6545 on the KT-45 side - I bet it would kill.

I'd love to try it on my 6545 on the KT-45 side - I bet it would kill. 6545 is like Marshall/HiWatt thing, right? if the Marshall side does anything like a typical plexi tone (whatever that definition may be), you'll like the Gold. i've never understood the whole HiWatt thing, so i don't know. but i definitely like the speaker with my November. i'll have to go back to the Vox with it in a while.

I just love my Celestion Blue with my Ghia. I've been looking for a 12 for my Mazerati and I think I found it in the Gold. Perfect marriage of amp and speaker.

The Doc says he'll load any of his cabs with any Celestion we want, right? If that's the case when I get a matching cab for my SRZ (a 1x12") it'll have to be a Gold!

Does this mean you got your Z 1x12 you had on order? If you ever are in the mood for a visitor so I could try a couple of your cabs, let me know. I could bring some things that you may like to try also......... Dr. Z, Germino's, Hamer's, McInturff's, PRS.............
