I'm trying to plan a trek through Europe w/ some friends this summer, and of course we need to go to Italy. I'd be a good chance to brush up on my Italian!

I think Elvis has left the building. No quite , he's back ! Thanks for all the suggestions and recommendations . As I thought it would be a wide open question based a lot on personal taste but there are a few types that were strongly recommended so I will be checking those out . Thanks again !! nitehawk55

Best Strat and tele PU's for blues? History is so rich with blues involving Strat and Tele PU's, that I have to wonder..." are we trying to re-invent the wheel?"

My main guitar is a swamp ash/maple board Strat with Fralin Vintage Hots. I have more hours on that axe that I do my wife! I also have a SRV Sig Strat (LOVE the neck) and a '52 RI Tele. I changed the SRV's Texas Specials and the Tele's stock PU's for Duncan Antiquities when I first got them. I have never been happy with either Antiquity set. They were both too thin sounding for me. I recently discovered Acme Guitar Works and George's *great* service thanks to a tip from Stu at Fatsound. I bought a set of Fralin Blues Specials for both the Tele and the SRV Strat from him. The SRV Strat is 100 times better. As others have noted, the Blues Specials are not the "Fendery" clean sound like the Vintage Hots, but I love them. They still have most of the chime and Strattyness, but are just thick enough. I knew I'd like the Tele bridge (Brad does!) but I was not sure about the "uncovered" neck pickup. In the end I said "the heck with vintage correctness!" and went for it. I am really glad I did. It doesn't have a vintage correct dark sound like the stock type, but it has a great Stratty sound. It's not exactly like a Strat but it's not like a Tele either. It's just a great ballsy sound. I'm so happy that I bought a set of Fralin Unbuckers for my Heritage Les Paul. I hope to get those installed this weekend. PDW

although i'm currently not a fulltime Strat player, i've played a fair number of Strats in the past and, as far as modern replacement pickups are concerned, i like Lollar's 50's pickups (what are they called now?) the best for the straight Strat sounds. as non-boutique alternative, i'd pick DiMarzio's Red Velvet and Fender CS's Fat50's. i've never really liked anything from Fralin (p90, Strat, Tele) before but i recently installed his '59 Tele pickups in my bender Tele and like them quite a bit for some reason. i guess never say never.... my main Tele has a dusty and dirty set of original pickups that came with the guitar 40 years ago but i haven't gotten around to replacing those grungy things with a fancy set of boutique pickups. so i've been meaning to ask this but what is this thing called "karma" that people are talking about?

Karma is something you get if you say something that people consider popular. It has almost nothing to do with imparted knowledge or dispensing experience. Karma is something you should get for NOT replacing the PU's on a 40 year old Tele. It's your main Tele for a reason, and that is that it likely sounds great!

Actually karma is usually given when you find someone's advice to be helpful. Sometimes it is given to show your appreciation. You can give karma for no reason at all. There aren't really any rules and in the end it does not really matter. It is just some function on this website that is there and you can choose to use it or not use it. It has nothing to do with saying something that people consider to be popular.

thanks for the explanation of the karma thing. hey, i have 3, thanks to whoever gave me those. so i guess the stars are for how many posts one has made? as for PUs, i don't think i'll ever like any other Tele pickups as much as i love those in my main Tele. those just complete the whole "package". so they'll stay in there until they go dead. but those Fralin '59 Tele pickups are the closest i've been able to get to that sound thus far. i don't even know if he makes that model. Lollars would be my next choice but they have a whole different thing going on: fatter, thicker with smoother top. they are all good attributes but quite different from what i want in my back up guitar. my back up guitar is quite differently setup than my main one (Bill Bore's long throw bender in a Relic Nocaster), so it took a long while to match up the sounds of 2 guitars. Lollar's P90s are spot on, though. i a/b those with an old one as well. i haven't tried any of his humbuckers yet.

I still don't understand Karma very well. When I was a tech back in the day, people paid me real dollars for the same things I say here. I don't dispense of a lot of tech stuff anymore, but try to pass on 35 years in the business, including being a liscensed Fender and Gibson dealer in the 70's. That's honest information based on honest time spent in a very rewarding and wonderful business! I've actually had some of these karma things taken away, folks! I'm honestly not joking! Probably by a 15 year old kid who didn't like what I said about whatever he was thinking was flavor of the month. If it was based on education, experience and articulation of facts and learned acumen, then maybe I'd have lots. But I'm too outspoken I believe, and don't pander to opinion... or come across too strong sometimes. This costs me...and I'm sure a lot of others as well. This is not a contest in my mind to see who can get someone else to agree with them to a point of getting points for it. Or am I wrong? In my mind there are some great folks who really are looking for solid advice. If I've ever offended anyone by speaking too strongly, I apologize. I want to be a straight shooter, not popular Conversely, if ever I've been able to help anyone, I feel pretty good! I'd be much happier with zero points, and still know I delivered the goods the best I can, with all the integrity I can give. That's all I can do.

I think you're right. It can't be taken seriously, and that's what I've come to understand, I guess. It just seems so silly. One guy here got karma for having a color of guitar another guy liked! In my mind that's either just a fun thing, or a popularity contest, or plain silly. That's not useful to many, but maybe a bit entertaining to some? Do I get Karma for working on 6 or 7 of James Burton's Telecasters? Or maybe that I have one of them in Candy Apple Red? Or if I sent a pic of that guitar it might be worth 32 points? See, it's just silly! At the end of the day James Burton and I are the same. We both love guitars and are happy we still have our health. And that's worth a lot more than karma! I love ya'll too!

Well the Karma deal comes with the software if I'm not mistaken. I suppose Lefty could shut it off, but we do have some fun with it.

Well it's official , my Mike turk "prototype" pick-ups are ordered for a Strat and a pair of Vintage 58's for my H-535 . He's building a drop in pickguard for the Strat and doing it up right . Great guy and very knowledgable . I'm going to check into a set of Vintage 53's for one of my Tele's too . I have now ventured into the unknown switching out pickups , I hope it's worth it !

I got my Mike Turk Tele pickups yesterday and installed them in a 2005 AmStd I have . What a difference !! , nice full tone now and quiet too with more bite but not too much that it looses it's tonal range . Notes are well defined and clear , sounds just like Mike said they would . Big surprise too is the bridge pickup which has a nice full warm sound as well and not that shrill treble , I actually like using it !! I have taken my H-535 to a local luthier to have a new nut and the Mike Turk vintage 58 humbuckers installed . I'm hopind they will sound better then the Shallers it has in it . Mike is also building me a drop in pickguard assy for a Strat and I should have that in 2-3 weeks . If it has the same sound as the Tele I'll be very pleased . So far my 1st ever guitar mod has been a good experience !

Talking to myself here but anyway....got the Mike Turk's for my Strat and they sound great too , lots of punch but still warm and bright . The vintage 58's for my H-535 sound fine too but I'm not a good judge with humbuckers , mostly been a single coil guy . So there you go , change pups in my Tele , Strat and Heritage 535 and all good ;D. Mike was great to deal with and if anyone want's to contact him he can be reached at www.miketurkpickups.com

I just finished building a custom tele and used a Voodoo te-60 for the bridge, and a fender 52 in the neck position. I love both of the pup's. The Fender 52 has a nice fat tone. The te-60 sounds really sweet too -

Thought I might! But honestly, I'll take cash under the table instead of Karma for work like that! Cash under the table buys crap like 55 and 62 telecasters. Havn't figured out what to do with Karma yet, but thanks ...I appreciate it!
