It'd be a shame to let that go.

That is a beauty. I didn't get the Tele thing until I got my Trussart now I'm infatuated with 'em.

Isn't that funny about Teles. I didn't get them either for years. I think all of them I ever picked up were poorly set up. That and they always looked so cheap compared to a Gibson or Guild, etc.. Eventually I got to appreciate the functional design and slighlty futuristic look to them. Then I wanted one but knew I couldn't do the 7-1/2" radius thing so I swapped into a '52 reissue and had the neck reprofiled and fretted with 6105s. Then I was hooked. Now I'm into boutique Teles and have a Lentz on order. Fenders have the name and look but the boutiques shoot 'em out of the saddle. If I had the one pictured here I wouldn't ever let it go. I'd want the correct looking pickups though. He says he wants a Lentz. After he gets that guitar he won't play the Fender anymore so I guess selling is good but a good backup is always a good idea too.

I've played the Zions and thought they were good but thought the bardens were a little too bright but I didn't play them thru a knwn amp so i might be wrong on that. The grosh's are GREAT but I'm not too crazy about the shape. Tom Anderson's are good enough that I have two of them. I tried a Cunetto Legato one time but didn't care for it's acoustic sound so I never plugged it in. I always wanted to try a Girl Brand guitar but the nearest dealer is 250 miles away and they come in an go so fast that one would probably be sold before i got there. There are lots more but i haven't tried them. I always wanted a danny gatton like you have but I don't care for the traditional Fender radius and the little frets.

Well the 59 Relic is on its way to one of our members in Tejas. And the check is on the way for the new Lentz SSL. I only cried a little bit. As a stay-at-home dad it is hard to sneak a new Lentz into the house (and checkbook) without one baby leaving. If it all works out at least it is staying within the Z-forum.

I was going to ask about Joe Barden PU's. They are a bit bright but I'm getting used to 'em. Anyone had positive/negative experiences with Barden's? The Trussart has a lovely warm tone, Seymour D's. It's got a fabulous neck, the only criticism is a 'clunk' when moving the PU selector. I've wanted to buy every Tom A guitar I've touched, his hollow T is the business.

I have the Bardens in my Blue Zion Tele pictured elsewhere on here. They ARE bright. Like borderline painfully bright. But I've come to believe that a bright guitar can always have the tone backed off or the amp adjusted to compensate. On the other hand, a dark guitar cannot be made to have high end-- ever. You can always take away some of what's there, but you can't create what is NOT there. I've no interest in trying other pups for my "tele". Hot and bright-- but very toneful with lots of room to tweak. jmo

Why sell that Tele? It looks fine to me, and if it plays nice...it appears to be a great little guitar! And the original PU's are just fine in those models.

Thats very true, I've just been playing the Danny Gatton through my Ghia and the tone pot is quite forgiving. There's plenty of scope on the amp tone too. I had a Les Paul standard that sounded 'mushy' and could have done with being a bit brighter for my tastes. I'm curious over these Zions, you obviously like 'em?

Thats very true, I've just been playing the Danny Gatton through my Ghia and the tone pot is quite forgiving. There's plenty of scope on the amp tone too. I had a Les Paul standard that sounded 'mushy' and could have done with being a bit brighter for my tastes. I'm curious over these Zions, you obviously like 'em? I love mine. In my specific case, the Zions just represented an unbeatable bargain. I acquired themn from an eBay seller that was frustrated at having new Zions sit on the wall for over a year unsold. I unded up getting a BRAND NEW tele for $800 and a BRAND NEW Strat for $750. At those prices, I would have been foolish not to buy. When i first received them, the action was set too low for my tastes. It was no kidding like 3/64ths inch or so, and it felt like you were "using the force" to play instead of your fingers. Effortless for sure. But I'm a sloppy player, and I couldn't play the action that low without extraneous noise from other strings-- especially on string bends. I also have the grievously short fingernails of a mechanic, which only aggravates the condition. The only imperfection on either of my two guitars was that the high E string on the Tele had the nut slot cut just a tiny bit too deep for me (again, low action is what Zion is known for). My heavy-handed playing would cause problems on the open E because of this. Restringing with 10s in place of 9s (and taking out a little truss tension) almost completely eliminated the weird behind-the-nut ringing, and it was banished forever when i did the unthinkable and installed a string tree on the guitar. My Zions have no headstock angle, and the angle provided by the staggered tuning machine height was insufficient (a fact that Zion was loathe to agree with me on, yet now the headstock is angled?). The Strat was flawless right out of the box. I raised the action a bit, re-strung with heavier strings, and went to town on it. The Fralins were good, but I needed to kill the hum so I went with Kinmans and have been glad that I did. IMO the best sounding "noiseless" single coil around. I added string trees to this axe at the same time I did the Tele, just because. Both guitars have bone nuts, and exceptional fretwork and detail. I think the only way to surpass the fretwork on them is to get it "Plekked". Fingerboard radius on the Zions is 12", which is a good compromise between comfort and playability with low action. Any flatter would be diminishing returns, imo. Profile is a soft C shape that feels pretty good to me. Neck pocket fight is TIGHT-- you can't even get floss in that gap. I'd like to comment on the tone, but since I just got my Stang Ray, I'm basically starting at square one with the guitars. It's like they are brand new again, so significant is the change over my previous amp. So here's some generalizations: Tele w/ Bardens: -- pups are BRIGHT and HOT. Neck pup is ballsy and clear, and will push an amp as hard as most mild humbuckers-- maybe harder. Middle position is very clear and has a lot of "sponge" to the tone with a TS9 on. Bridge pup has to be respected, as it can be bright enough to assassinate a listener in the direct line of fire. Even mild OD takes the edge off quite a bit. Awesome Gibbons (ca. Eliminator) tone here with any super-compressed device like a Rockman. Strat w/ Kinmans: -- Awesome chime and bell-like tones in 2&4. Not as much "quack"as some would like, but lots of chime and bell-like clarity (esp w/ 'Ray!). -- Neck pup is a super-ballsy blues lead that sounds good with anything from crystal clean to heavy OD. Always comes through. -- Middle pup is a lot like the neck, only with a little nasalness to it. It's borderline smoky in tone. Good from some SRV tones. -- Bridge is clear and just bright enough. Really smoky tones with certain OD settings. Sounds good even with Boogie-levels of gain. Very low output pup (as are all Kinmans), but sounds great and balanced. Also does a very great clean funk rhythm. I'll try to get some sound clips up somehow, even if they are movies. I can't really do much home recording, so videotape is probably all I can give for awhile.

Hohn, I'd be interested to hear your tele thru your Stangray and what you think of the new amp? The UK distributor gets one in next month, I'm still infatuated with my Ghia but like the sound of the Stangray. Ain't diesels great! I used to overhaul warship V12 Paxmans, now it's nuc subs that fund Z and guitar addiction...My nails have grown back, the advantages of management. Much prefer the tools if I'm honest.

I purchased a Custom Shop Fender '59 Relic Tele in 1998 from American Music in Seattle. This was #3 of 6 guitars made for the store. It was basically built to 59 specs with the exception of jumbo frets and a birdseye maple neck. I am wondering what it may be worth on ebay? As I want to buy a Lentz SSL to pair with my Z28. Anyone care to guess the color? Note: I have a Callaham T-bridge and Rio Grande Muy Grandes in it, but have original bridge and pickups. Unfortunately I don't have any other specs (not available from the store or Fender custom shop). I do have the Custom Shop certificate. Here are some pics: OK, Got her Tuesday, gigged her last night, this is now #1 ;D What a great guitar, bumped the TAG off "Go to" spot at least while the honeymoon is on. What a fine instrument. This is from 1997, Cunetto era of the Custom Shop, the very early days of the relic series and I now see why they are so sought after. Thanks JD Enjoy your Lentz, I think you'll find the Lentz neck quite similar to this one as I have fondled BW's Red Lentz and the Lentz built neck on his '63 "mutt" Strat as he calls it.

As a non-relic guy, I gotta say that's a sweet fiddle-- and if it plays and sound like a dream, who cares if it's got a nick in the finish?

Always scary buying a guitar blind but this is the one I've been seeking for many years, I quit counting guitars after owning 50, after that what's the point? Buy, disappointed, sell, over and over. But this one has the feel and playabilty that is perfect for me, I don't care what one looks like, color. condition, etc. as long as it's an effortless joy to play..and this one is ;D Here's your first Karma for finally "Getting" Tele's !! Welcome to the other side Peace, Curt

50! I've got 6 and I've been told to reduce em to two. I've got an acoustic being made, should be ready may 07. I looked at getting an original 50's tele but they are seriously hard to find and mega bucks..unless you are billy Gibbons. That one of yours really is the business. Are you keeping those PU's? How do you rate the Route 66's?

Just noticing how this '59 Tele ( relic) is still getting very good reviews from a lot of folks here, as well it should! Lentz, Anderson, etc. are great guitars, but there's very little magic to a boutique guitar. I can't explain these things, but a good Fender just dances! A great one takes your soul.

I may stick the stocker back in or try a Lollar Special as several Bud's run them and love 'em. The 66 is the Bee's Knee's !!! GREAT amp, along with a Ghia, my favorite 2 Z amps, Unfortunately I sold my Ghia to BillyGuitar but will end up with another I'm sure. Right now I'm wanting an RXES as my new gig call for some serious volume

My Anderson is a great guitar but the modern vibe is different. This one FEELS like a Telecaster ;D She's not going anywhere.
