That it's a great amp, especially when played loud. Takes pedals as good as any amp you will find. Very unique, open and thick tone. I like it better with a mid scooped speaker like the G12H30. I found that an RC Booster type pedal really helped boost the signal and brighten up the tone a bit. The amp has extremely good sustain. Mine seems to really like Tele's, and prefers my Strats to my LP.

Thanks, guys. I'd be running it through a 1x12 convertible Z-cab w/ a Gold, or, for bigger stages, an Avatar 2x12 w/ V30 and G12H30 (poor man's ZBest). Do you guys prefer an open or closed back?
I'll be using a Brakelite a good bit, playing mostly Strats. Probably going for a red one (though red isn't really in the spirit of the Route, somehow); hoping it likes my KoT in particular, but if it doesn't I've got some other choices. The bad news is that I'll have to sell my Mesa LSS to raise the cash, probably--but I can live with that.

Sounds like you have some nice cabs to run her through. I've never used a closed back with my Route so I can't compare the open to the closed cab. I love what I get out of my 1x12 open back though. Its easy on the back too.

I like the open back. The closed cabinet would be better if you are looking for a more directional sound.

The route 66 is an awesome amp. I still think maybe it's Mikes' most special amp. It's very unique and just a great amp to own. I personally like closed back cabs with it to get that thump and "thwack" that it delivers in spades. It's very rich. Open backs tend to give it a little more "americana" sound that breathes a little more whereas the closed backs make it sound more like early British tones to my ears. I love the 'ray to death, and the Rem is a great one to own too, but still if I could only have one...
