This is a continuation of my other thread on the Celestian Blue. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/78547/considering-celestion-blue I was just about to pull the trigger on a single Blue to use with my M-12 safely and switch out to my Weber Blue 50 watt if I ever use my Route 66 or KT-45 which I am using rarely now. Then I thought about the Gold as it will handle the power of all of my amps and never require changing. What are the sonic differences between the Gold and Blue. Tell me your deepest secrets! How much chime will be lost on the Gold?

You don't really lose chime. The bottom end just stays a little more controlled when you push the speaker up around 15 watts. Of course there is no comparison when you go up past that. The Blue is eventually going to blow.
I have a situation very similar to you. I have a single Gold in my MAZ 8 even though it is overkill because I sometimes re-amp it with a 50 watt setup. A Fryette PS-2. If I was never to do that I would have gone with a Blue.

Well I just pulled trigger on the Blue. I guess I feel I cannot pass the opportunity to try out the holy grail of speakers. As of late my gigs have all been small clubs (as well as basement use) so using my Route 66 is overkill as of late. the 12 watts should allow me to crank and see what the deal is.

Do your best to break it in. It can be a little nasal early on.

Yes, don’t give up on it. The goods are in there waiting to be released. And the M12 is the perfect catalyst.

As efficient as a C-Blue is you will be amazed at how loud it will play. It should handle 50-80 seat clubs easily.

For break in I followed Celestion's suggestion of playing it loud for an hour with open ringing chords. Quite loud but not painfully loud. So I recorded a loop on my looper, set the amp and looper power supply on a 1 hour timer and left the house. Came back, bingo...a nicely loosened up brand new Gold ready to rock. Worked great!

I have a blue in the maz 18 coupled with a heritage in a closed back Z cabinet. Highs and lows, nice chime and full bottom with the heritage. I also have a blue and gold in two Swart cabinets, i use them with my other amps, one of each is a hard combo to beat, but the heritage with the blue gives great tone.

That’s my first way too early observation. 2nd would be the speaker doesn’t seem to handle bass that well. Not too concerned as that’s not what I bought it for. The chime is there and plan on a break in process that will include mostly live all out playing

I noticed that you have a Weber 50 watt Blue Dog. I always preferred the Gold to the Blue as a stand alone speaker but one of the best cabs I ever had with an el-84 amp was a Blue and a 50 watt Blue Dog (ceramic) in an open back 2x12.
