Bryan,
Workin' on one myself........I just keep checking Ebay for the best price on what I need....Specialty Guitars has Callaham Hardware, and you can buy direct from them..Nice folks to deal with too.
Newmetalshop music in Clearwater, Fl has some nice Mighty Mite birdseye necks, and ship unbelieveably quick..Some of 'em are "best offer"...You can get a killer deal if you know what you want..Good luck. ;D
T rock..

I built a parts tele last year - everything came from ebay or warmoth. I absolutely love the way it looks, sounds and plays - my best guitar - slowly beating out my strat/warmoth partscaster also w/ Voodoo pickups
-- Warmoth neck - maple - rosewood fretboard - minimal finish I love the pro neck and stainless frets - I have 5 electrics and 4 of them have warmoth necks
-- The body is Japanese and pre finished, routed - ready to go - Swamp Ash -maple top
-- VooDoo Pickups - man they sound sweet!
I got different assorted parts & hardware from ebay and Warmoth, but if I had to do it again - I would get all the hardware from Warmoth - As far as knowing what parts to get, Call Warmoth and they'll think of everything, or PM me and I'll give you the stock list you need.

Check these guys: www.usacustomguitars.com/They are some disgruntled Warmoth folks who started a competing company and they are kicking butt. Great parts, great prices, and even a great web page. Check the link for Virtual Guitars - you can assemble your beauty right there on their web page. Very cool!

benttop,
Do you think USACustom has better parts and/or service than Warmoth? I have never been less than perfectly satisfied w/ Warmoth, but maybe some people have had issues with them - maybe?

Well I don't have any firsthand experience with either, so all I have are comments I've read. But I've seen a lot of great comments about USA Custom. They make a very high quality product.

I guess I've heard some great things about USA Custom also. Maybe both are a good choice. All I know is that I really love Warmoth necks - I can't put my finger on it, maybe it's the compound radius fretboards, but they play like butter.

I just looked and you can get the compound radius at USA Custom as well. In fact it is their standard neck profile.
I doubt you would be dissatisfied with either brand. They both make a fine product.

I must be one of the few people who had a bad experience with Warmoth and I would not go to them again. I had a neck that had an humped fretboard and they wouldn't help becuase it had been mounted. Now I know I arleady drilled it but until it was on a guitar with string pressure on it I couldn't tell. I thought they'd have some understanding and try to help but I got alot of BS and nasty attitude from the owner. Wish I'd saved the e-mails. Now most folks have no problems..Just be very careful...

the Guitar Mill also makes good lookin' stuff. I'm in a haitus from building mine. I bought a home-made body off eBay a while and tried to finish it myself and it wasn't pretty. I was looking at USA Custom too but from what I understand the guys that do the finishing for them use poly and refuse to use nitro.

Guitar Mill makes some OUTSTANDING stuff, and Mario is great guy to deal with..I just got an "antiqued" Strat neck in last week that they've been building for about 8 weeks..It's KILL..But, you better have a fat wallet, and be prepared to wait.

i've found USACG necks to be better than Warmoth's.

Warmoth and USACG are both in the same city - Could it be that they are the same product? Maybe made in the same production facility? Marketing strategy? Just wondering -

USACG was started by some guys that didn't like the way things were going at Warmoth. They want to make Warmoth look bad by making a superior product. From what I have seen of other buyer's experiences, they are doing a pretty good job of it. They are in the same town because they used to work at Warmoth.

Well, You know what this means. Now I have to make a second Custom tele w/ all USACG parts so I can find out who truly does it better. I'm being half serious here, but I think I'd seriously like to try it.

Well you would need several from both to have a large enough sample size for a fair comparison. ;D I'm not suggesting anything...

I've got 2 Warmoth guitars and they are both very nice. I think choosing the right person to put it all together is a very important part of the process. I've heard great things about USACG too though.

Yeah that is probably true.....Finding someone that knows what there doing......Ah how about when you get all the parts is it hard to put these things together ? I've never done this so i have no idea if i should attemp it or not ha ha.......but I am pretty much determined to ........Also how much would a good parts-tele run like a swamp ash body, nice maple neck, pickups, hardware etc...........B.

Putting together a guitar from parts is pretty easy. If you've ever taken apart a guitar and reassembled it, it's about that hard.

I priced out a strat once from warmoth parts and it ended up being within a few dollars of a fender american strat. Of course, you can get exactly what you want, but you won't be saving any money. That's unpainted, mind you, if you let warmoth or whomever paint the body it'll cost significantly more.

Rcrecelius, I must of missed that thread......ah cool I will check it out......yeah thanks for all the help, I'm going to order most of the parts from that custom usa place they seem to be pretty good folks.......and yeah he was saying you could put a killer tele together for $1000's so yeah compared to most of the boutique builders that's pretty darn good......Ah anyone know how the resale on these things are ? I heard from someone that it wasn't to good but who knows that could be just hearsay.........B

Resale on anything but Fender and Gibson sucks. But a few others do ok, like PRS and Anderson. But I tried to trade one of my Groshes once and the guy was trying to offer me like $400 for this guitar that I just paid nearly $3K for. Of course that was a store, so he can't offer retail, but still!!!! If it's a great guitar, you need to find a buyer who really appreciates that. He's the guy who is willing to pay for it. Finding that buyer is a real challenge....

I had a store offer me $450 trade in for my Korg AC30 (which I had bought from them for like $1,200 a few years earlier) with blues and chrome stand towards my Stang Ray head and Z 2x10 cab. I said no and haven't felt like doing business with them since. I know the Korg AC30s lost value when the Chinese ones came in but the speakers are worth almost that much by themselves and the stand is worth something too. I'm still mad at they who shall remain nameless! Parts guitars may be wonderful but you'll lose big time when you sell so it's better to keep them as backups. I'd say most of the value has to be in the actual build and results.

Parts fiddles have no resale to speak of, spend $1k to build and depending on how main stream the specs are or are not you may get $500...or you may not be able to sell it for any price if it's specs are "off the wall", you can always part it and ebay it, no harm as it was built from parts.
The other thing is...until it is together you never know how it'll sound and play..some are magic like the one Seaking just grabbed and the one Ronnie built...some are so-so at best.
That is the beauty of buying a Fender, you can play a slew of 'em until one moves you and they have great resale in comparison.
Texas $0.02

After owning an embarassing number of guitars, the $500 MIM Tele that has become my #1 gig axe is in the top 5 I have ever owned...and that is well in excess of 50 guitars since the late '70's including Anderson, GVCG, Fender Custom Shops, Gibson Custom Shop, home brews, etc.
