I was pretty impressed. I actually tried two, and the necks were quite different on them. The one I was trying to deal on (didn't get it) had the better neck of the two I thought. But what really impressed me was the setup. Every note was clear as a bell, even when bending a step and a half. Even my Grosh guitar eventually buzzes out after that big of a bend. But this G&L was nearly a perfect setup.
The other thing I was impressed about was the finish on the neck. This was their butterscotch Tele, so it had a Maple fingerboard, and I always avoid them because they are hard to get used to for me. But not the G&L. I'm not sure what was different, but wow, it was way easy to play.
Of course it sounded awesome. Standard Tele fare on the bridge, but on the neck it was a modern neck tone, not the original weak Tele tone. I could easily play country, rock, blues, or pop with that guitar. Very cool.
In the end we couldn't work a deal (I was trying to work a trade in with my Grosh tele). I had made up my mind what it would take, and they couldn't get there. DANG! But now I have the jones for one of those - it really did it for me.

I foresee a G&L ASAT "Tele" in your future... I'm really glad you got a chance to check some out and see what the "fuss" is all about. Ray K.

But that store was acting like they are gold or something. The other dealer here in town lists prices that are 35% lower. They just don't have the one I want...

I bought this one at the Arlington Guitar Show today. I played a bunch of guitars there over the course of a day and this was the last one I played. I knew in five minutes I couldn't leave without it! It's got a five-way switch and a push-pull volume pot to switch between series and paralell. The pickups are overwound versions of their standard Magnetic Field Design pickups. Smooth, glassy and refined Strat quack.

you are looking into a ASAT Classic, Steve? ASAT or ASAT Classice, also try those Tribute models if you can. they are nothing to sneeze at. a G&L dealer near here told me that they don't carry them because they aren't real G&L guitars but when i did try a couple at another store, they felt (and sounded) pretty much the same as "real G&L" guitars to me. or as doc66 suggested, definitely buy used.

I've been playing an ASAT classic for the last 2 years and its turned into my #1 giging guitar. While the back pickup is everything I want in a tele the front ices the cake for me and makes it really versatile. They make one with a humbuker in the front and I think with Z amps that it would work very well also. I tried one in a store and they balanced well for a humbucker vs a single coil.

Yeah, ASAT Classic. They actually have several Tribute ASAT Classics in that store, but I'm short of fundage just now, so was trying to go the trade route. My GAS list just gets longer and longer... AAAAUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I've played some G&L's before and have been impressed with most of them. This may sound like a lame, superficial reason, but the headstock shape has always turned me off of the G&L's. I'm not sure why, but I just can't seem to get into a guitar with a headstock I don't like. I know it should be all about the tone, feel, and playability, but I can't help myself.
Anyway, G&L seems to build a consistently good guitar and seems to take pride in their guitars. You should buy it Steve; I'm sure it would sound great through the Ray!

Hey Sonicgator, I took me along time to get used to the headstock,to me at least, the small headstock looks alot better with a tele than a strat.Everything else is fabulous.

the Tribute series guitars are pretty cool at around $400~550 or so. i almost bought an ASAT Tribute but i figured i don't need any more guitars at this point. i pretty much use 1 guitar for all the gigs and recordings... OK, maybe 2. i would have to agree with SG on the headstock. it's that small pointed protrusion before the round tip if the headstock that bugs me. it's hard to find nice headstock design in general, though.

There aren't too many good headstocks that aren't already used by Fender and Gibson. I think the G & L is as good as most of them. One I DO like a lot is the new Lentz. Fender-like but different. Hands down, Tyler's the WORST!

The combination of the funky headstock and the triple large, unually shaped pickups make it look like some of those old import knockoffs made in the 60s...which I kinda like oddly enough It's got personality because you can tell it's not quite a tele.

Well the way the ruling came down on the lawsuit back in the '70's, the headstock is the trademark. So you'll never see a non-Fender headstock that looks just exactly like a Fender. I actually think that's kind of cool - the designers have to get pretty creative because there's not a lot of real estate there to work with. To come up with something original and attractive is difficult. My Grosh is a good example - check it out: Notice how close to a Fender Tele that is without actually being identical? I think Don did a nice job on that. On the G&L, I'm not as fond of that little point there, but they had to do SOMETHING different from a Fender headstock.

I just stole a g and l classic from Ebay. Tele 62 helped give me the "push" to "BIN" . The guitar was absolutely stunning right out of the case.............It had that "mojo". Resonated and sounded nice rich and woody even unplugged.
The neck, however, was crystallized with some goopy finish and the frets were not level. A typical production line guitar setup.
For me, I needed a better playing and feeling fret board so I had it refretted and I had the neck stripped and finished with tung(sp?) oil.
Honest to God, now the guitar feels and plays like a custom Anderson........totally TOTALLY kicks any $4000 custom shop fender tele's A$%%...........
So for a total of about $1100, which included the custom work, I have the most amazing instrument.........G and L's rock and their value is unbeatable. I suppose it would have been fine to just have the original frets leveled, but, I wanted the "satin" feel.....

That is nice, but you can get a brand new one for $795, so I'm not sure why I would go that route except that it is one fine looking piece. Ow!

I've been thinking about jumping on the G&L bandwagon. I had the chance to get one a few years ago, and didn't. Kind of wish I had done it now...
