After playing my 66 through a 2x12 marshall cab for the last month it was sounding good. Z BEST arrived last evening, Marshall who? The sound was 3D, just sounded warm I didn't hear any harshness from the vintage 30 on top. Hooked the marshall 2x12 cab back up just to compare and it seemed dull. Hooked the Z back up it's alive. There is a magic with the RT66 and the Z cab. Started connecting other heads, marshall and Maz 18 combo, they sounded good, but the 66 just had the tone. Started to get some awesome Robin Trower sounds with the bb preamp and then the wife came home.
Thanks to Dr. Z and everyone on this forum for all the great info

I played my Z with several different 2-12 cabs, open and closed and found the z-best is unbelievable. Its a front-ported cabinet and a very unique design. It is the best match for a Route 66 hands down.

I hear ya Greenback! I've had my 66 & Z-BEST about a month now and I can't believe some of the sounds that I can get out of this rig.I'm talking just the the amp& cab. No effects. I can swear that sometimes I hear some reverb coming out of the Speakers and the 66 has no reverb......Maybe I just get too excited with the great tone??? Enjoy your new toyz.I know I am....Nice to know another RT.66 Brother. Kim

Tas, I know you've answered this question before but what pedals did you use for this track? How was the 66 set? That's a great sound and a very cool song!

Tas, I know you've answered this question before but what pedals did you use for this track? How was the 66 set? That's a great sound and a very cool song! Hey Jwr, no pedals used on that track, just pure Rt 66/zbest/grosh set neck. Amp was pretty wound up. Everything was on or about 3 oclock. That's how I recorded the whole album, clean sounds I just rolled back the guitar volume till it was clean enough. I love the way the 66 bottom end on that track is so tight it's almost percussive.

Nice tune Taz. Great aggressive tone, lot's of rip. DR.Z Thanks Doc, it's a very special amp. Great blues amp but it'll get aggressive classic rock tones to die for also. I LOVE playing Zep through this rig.

Jaye, your the best man. I can't believe you didn't use any pedals, I played that song for a friend of mine and he loved it as well. He's also very interested in the 66 and a Z-Best. Thanks Brother!

This is a great cab. I bought a Maz 18 NR recently and ran it through a normal 2- 10 Cab and was mildly impressed then ran it through the 2-12 Z Best that I have been using under my Route 66 for the last couple years and wow what a huge difference in every possible way, volume obviously but also harmonic content, focus, you name it. I was not aware that cabs could make that big a difference until I did that and I have great speakers in the 2-10 also. It was just a huge change.

I strongly believe the speaker/cab option is the most important link in your tone chain. Once you have an amp you like, the speakers/cab are you're most influential tone shaper IMHO. I'd love 6 or 7 different cabs just to run with my Route 66. The Z-Best is just a killer sounding cab out of the box. A great cab can make an average amp sound good as a crap cab can make a great amp sound ordinary. Route 66 and Z-Best is just great + great = extraordinary ;D

My 1st venture into the Z-world was a red RXES with a matching Z-best loaded with weber blue & silver combo. too loud.
I traded out the RXES and bought a Rt66 from the forum. Perfect. I also have a 2x12 open back Z w/ V30 and G12H combo which gives the 66 a slightly different tone. Lately I've been running the Maz-38 1x12 I got from Yup through the 2x12 open back and the Rt66 through the Z-best. I've also had the 66 through an Avatar 1x12 [sold it to Drewtunes] and a Z 2x10. The Z-best is far and away the finest cab to match to the Route. Just plug and play or get some added fur w/ boost/OD. It's the sound I've been hearing in my head for years but couldn't find.....

Well a little club I play Sat nights has been packed out the last two weeks and I've run outta headroom with my 66 and Ulbrick 1-12. It's a 35 watt speaker and with this rig and my humbuckers it breaks up pretty nicely at 12 oclock all knobs and just gets dirtier from there without much volume increase. Exactly why I bought it. BUT, I'm really excited now as it now seems like a good time to start hauling the ZBEST to that gig and I haven't gigged with it for some time, so I'm really looking forward to it. Whoo-hoo!

Route 66 & Z-BEST 2x12. One badass combination. I am amazed and find new tones with this set-up every time I plug it in. I'm in blues tone heaven since I've got my Z. My birthdays in Sept. I am dropping hints like crazy at home about how much I'd like a Z Airbrake. Hopefully I'll see one in my jam room soon!!

Well, I hauled out the Z best tonight for the gig at the club that has been packed. Man, it's a great sounding cab. Haven't used it for a good 3 to 4 months. By the last set I had my Route 66 pumping at around 2 oclock all knobs no attenuation. The manager at one stage during "Love In An Elevator" Aerosmith came over with his DB meter and I was saying to the crowd, "quick stand in front of him!" He was cool though. I also had a patch lead go down mid song last set so I just unplugged the guitar lead and went straight into the amp. Must say I missed my volume boost for leads but was kinda fun. Have a gig on Wed playing Zep, Free, Cream, etc etc... guess I'm gonna have to lug the Z-best to that baby too.

Well I'm just clueless!!!
Hauled the Z best to the last nights gig. Louder band and a slightly larger room but less people, being a wed night. This band plays lottsa Zep, Free, Cream. It's a rockin' loud band. The bass player uses 2x4-10 cabs. I couldn't get the 66 above 9 oclock on all knobs!!!!! And we were LOUD! Our drummer was complaining he dented all his tom skins. I'm beginning to think it's not the size of the room but how many people are in it and how tightly packed they are and how much room you have between rig and crowd. I really struggled with the response at that level although everyone said it sounded great out front. The weird thing is, if this was my first gig with the 66 and Z best I would probably have thought it was just too much amp and cab for me and would have looked at something smaller even though I have used this rig every week for the past 4 years? Just goes to show you can't form an educated opinion after one listen/session.

I had more compliments on my tone with the 66 and zbest then any amp / speaker combo I've ever had.

Hi all:
I'm getting a little stoked on the whole Route 66 thing. I've got a Z Best cab w/ a V30 and a G12H30. I'd really like to try one through this cab. How would an MXR Distortion + work with that amp? This thread is got me goin'...
Peace,
Rick
