Skip the MXR Distortion....just go straight in. If you've got a Z-best cab, you've got to find someone with a Route 66 and turn all the dials to 3 and blast away. It will be loud if you don't have an attenuator. And the only one worth having for this amp/cab combo it an Air-Brake. Maybe a hotplate.

I've heard mixed reviews about attenuators. Never really used them; but thanks for the advice anyways. Will the amp give me the same thump with an Airbrake?

Does the Z best come stock with the V30/G12H30 or the G12M/G12H combo?? Which one suits better? I would think the G12M/G12H combo...?

I bought mine from Fat Sound and that's what Stu recommended. I think you can get it configured a number of ways...

The stock Z Best is V30/G12H30. Sounds amazing with the 66, very quad like but it is a loud cab. If you run your amp clean you can use it just about anywhere. If you are wanting to put the amp into overdrive it will be loud.
I've always wondered about two Heritage G12M's would sound like in a Z Best with the 66. Pretty dark and smokey I would think but pretty nice early 70's rock or blues rig and I'll be the volume is tamed somewhat too.
But I'd have to get another because the ZBest is not getting touched.
My 1-12 cab with an inefficient speaker makes a huge volume difference. Very small club friendly.

Sorry if I'm highjacking this thread: I was kinda curious myself, however, I think that if you turn the cab vertical with the V30 on top, you'll hear the brights. This is only based on an assumption, of course. Right now I have a Bogner Ecstasy, and that can be somewhat dark as well; however if I turn the cab vertical, the highs are much more apparent. That being said, I do like the darker thick tones. All the best, Rick

If I recall correctly, I'm sure I read where Doc said the cab is voiced or designed to be played vertical. I never use mine horizontal.
I know I mentioned dark in the Guinness thing but I wouldn't call the Route 66 a dark amp at all. I actually think it has plenty of brightness and presence, just not a sparkley or chimey top. Might be darker with 2 G12M's but certainly not with the Zbest.
Man, our club was packed tonight. It's only a small pub but when they are packed in there I can really crank the 66 with my 1-12. It's such a great sound.
