Hi. I have a RT 66 that has chinese kt66s in it. The recommendation is for gt kt66hp, but these are no longer available. I love the amp and have since gotten a Maz 38 sr to go with it, bit I think the sound is maybe not what it could be. Anyone have any ideas or recommendations? Thanks,Scott

hIT THE GT WEBSITE AND THE CATALOG SHOWED THEM RECENTLY DISCONTINUED. IT MENTIONED THAT THE KT66C WAS A DECENT REPLACEMENT, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE HP EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A BIT CHEAPER. I'M NOT THE HUNG UP ON PRICE BUT I NEVER LIKED CHINESE TUBES MUCH AS THEY SEEMED TO PUKE OUT AT VERY UNEXPECTED MOMENTS. THE RT 66 SEEMS TO RUN A BIT WARM SO I WANTED SOMETHING WITH SOME LIFE AS WELL AS WARMTH. SCOTT

From what I got at the GT website, it looks like the HPs were made for them in Russia. Now, I would assume, that like all things these days it was a money thing as far as manufacturing costs and all that. I thought it funny that they didn't offer a Russian or European alternative. There seem to be a lot of more expensive GEC and the like out there, but nothing offering price and quality. Scott

Think I found something out. Visit www.dougstubes.com. He is offering russian KT66 tubes as even he states that the HP is discontinued. His sidebar is that these are made at the Reflector plant in Saratov, and that they are made from the gt hp tooling which as we all know is made as an exact copy of the Genelex Gold Lion. Thanks to everyone for listening helping. I think I like the Z community. Scott

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Russian mafia.

Nostrodumas had a little word to me and said 25 years from now Blues players will be searching the world for Kt66 tone and amps, like the "holy grail" of tone. The Route 66 will be worth $100 000 dollars and all those guys who sold them on ebay because they were worried they wouldn't find tubes will be kicking themselves. I might set up a secret society of "Templars" to protect mine and bury it under the Myles Rose line! It will have an encoded power up button and only the best blues players will be given the combination by the Templars. There will be secret rituals where the best blues players meet and play tunes from Buddy Whittington's 2007 release. GEC KT66 valves will be hidden in various temples from Tibet to Peru. Only the Templars will know their whereabouts. ;D

Sweet !!! Welcome Brother, That makes me smile Yep, It is one of my favs too, my Z/28 was the same, and it was an impulse buy as well, I got so excited it matched my cab !!! I wanted a back up 66, not that they go down but you never know, plus I really want to see what these do with other tubes, It's driving me crazy. If I could coax just a touch more sizzle on the very top.......... Jaye, I am way diggin' the Emi Texas Heat with the Route 66 as well FYI. Actually, I like every speaker I've tried it with.

I'm wondering if the Celestion gold might give you that sizzle. I was lying in bed thinking of all kinds of speaker combinations last night. I think I'm getting more "cab lust" than "amp lust" lately. I should have my mind on more productive things... Its a disease!

If Ms. Curt catches on I'll be dead alright Thanks Arun, been awhile bud !! Hope your well also, you've been a lil quiet as of late. Yep, that's what ya get growin' up lusting after BFG, Bad Co, Free, Skynyyrd, etc. tones !! Marshall and a Lester or nuthin' was my Creed for a looong while. Now Tele's rule but I love that Marshallesque grind. Arun, ya need 248 to catch 'ol Jaye and get aboard !! Jaye, you may be right about the gold, I want that low E to POP and the high E and B to sizzle......Tonker bottom and Blue top.......

Just bought my first Z yesterday...a Route 66. When angels sing, they sound like a Route 66...
Wanted to let every know that JJ is presently working on a KT66 tube but it will be several months before it is available. Not sure if that start of mass production or US delivery date but I will post an update once I have more information.

Per you request;
Hello Myles,
Folks here are saying the KT-66HP's are discontinued, is this true? when can we expect to see them again?
I noticed a rush of used Route 66's on ebay, they are selling cheap so I'll assume people are affraid there will be no tubes, I actually picked one up off ebay very reasonable (this will be my second as a back up) and would like to experiment with other tubes, can I rebias and run EL-34's? 6L6's? I'd like to set the second one up as a dirtier amp.
What is the plate voltage of a Route 66.
Any recommendations bias etc. for any of these is greatly appreciated.
As always "THANKS", Curt
Curt
The GT-KT66HP was a GT exclusive tube built at the Reflector factory in Moscow. When all that Sovtek vs Russia stuff happened the factory became somewhat of a mess and they are still recovering. This was a tube developed by GT and produced on GT tooling in one area of that tube complex. I do not not know if or when this tube will be able to be made again.
In the meantime, we have changed some aspects of the KT-66C and are trying to make that tube what the HP was.
If you need KT66C's that are traced to be the same as the HPs just let me know as I can do this for folks in this forum.
Plate volts is usually around 470 or so and I prefer the bias at 36mA or so but this is really personal taste.
470 V 30 W
40% 50% 60% 70%

Hopefully the JJ KT66 tubes will be better than the preamp tubes they make. I'm not a fan of the JJ pre tubes.

Not that I want to change mine but will the 66 take other power tubes than KT66's? Have we had this discussion?

Tas, you read my mind I've wondering if anyone tried 6L6s in the 66 or even EL34s, maybe some old Teslas.

Welcome back to the club Drew! Gotta love the big bottle grind. Speaking of that...I'm still hanging to hear a Delta, as it apparently gets pretty dirty from the get go. I know a guy with a pretty good stash of KT66's so I think I'll be OK for a while yet...mind you they cost...but they are worth it too.

I remeber reading a post made by Myles about running different tubes in the 66. I believe Myles said that 6L6 tubes were ok to run but NOT EL34's.

Not that I want to change mine but will the 66 take other power tubes than KT66's? Have we had this discussion? Jaye and Drew, I asked Myles this in the "ASK Myles or Chad" Thread. 6L6 yes, EL-34 NO. Myles suggests a certain 6L6 on his reply along with a PI suggestion I had asked for. Drop over there and check out his reply, I copied it to a word doc so I can send it to ya'll if you can't find it or want it for future referance. Good weekend to ya ! Curt Have I mentioned lately that I LOVE my Route 66??? ;D They will have slightly less output which may be a plus as we would be able to get them bottles workin' a bit more. I plan to try this in the near future.

Here ya go; Curt,
6L6 yes
EL34 no .... the screen resistors are of the wrong value and the output transformer will be a mismatch. For 6L6's I'd try either Svetlanas (real ones) or 6L6GE in a #7 rating (they are not as strong as 66HPs) and bias at 30-32mA for a start.
For the PI .... either a 12AX7M or 12AX7R2 (Sovtek LPS) that is matched and has current output of at least 1.1mA or transconductance of at least 1500 per side.
Myles comes through again !!
