I've been trying to come up with a high headroom clean setting that is rich and full for my USA G&L Legacy Strat. I wanted a setting that is not too ice-picky or too thin and trebly sounding, while retaining plenty of clarity.
I tried maxing the Bass and treble, Mids to zero, and dialing down the "Cut" to 9 O'clock. That worked OK, but it was too ice picky and thin in the treble. So then I tried diming the Cut knob, setting it wide open, and cutting the treble knob to 9 O'Clock. I find this much richer and less brittle sounding. I also found adding some mids gives more fullness. So I set the mids to between 9 and 10 O'Clock.
I submit: "Clean Rich Headroom"
Use Input 2
Volume - 9 to 10 O'Clock (set to desired overall volume) Treble 9 O'Clock Mids 10 O'Clock Bass MAX Cut MAX Master Vol Max Reverb 11 O'Clock

everything cranked but with cut backed off to 9:00 and adjust volume to desired breakup this sounds impeccable to my ear.

Cool Mike, I should have thought of this. How do you print it out?? I think you should be able to download the attachment (html) file, open it up with a browser (IE, Safari, Firefox, etc.) and then print it out. To download -- well, it depends on the system you're using, but generally if you right-click on your mouse there will be a choice something like "Save link as..." that will pull it over to your computer. If that doesn't work, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

A couple new settings from jordanbunte in the Gorgeous Cleans thread. May take a little while for the link in the original post to be updated. Mike (doctorice) Hey! Thanks Mike! One other thing....not to "undo" what you've done for me, but you can probably take off the "SRV" settings for me in there. They aren't very SRV-ish generally speaking. It's more of a subdued clean for his classier tunes like Lenny or Rivera Paradise, etc. Also, the "voxy" sounds aren't very Voxy (man, what's wrong with me?) ;D I've got a few other settings I may send over to you soon that are a bit more accurate for those types of sounds (SRV and Voxy). BIG THANKS for all that you do!

After watching a You Tube video of Eric Johnson playing around with his equipment and getting a Keith Richards Brown Sugar tone, I thought I'd try my luck on the Maz 18 2x12. I had been getting close, but today I nailed it.
I think my guitar has a lot to do with it. I was using my Mexican Standard Tele (modded courtesy of my old bud at Sothern Il Electrics) with a Lollar Vintage T neck PU. None of my other Teles hit it like this one...oh yeah...tone and volume 100% on the guitar.
Amp setting as follow: V=3, T=11, M=2:45, B=3, MV=12, Cut=9, Reverb= OFF with the Brake Lite set on 3. I think I'm going to play Brown Sugar for rest of the day.

Hey all, just adding a reply so this post continues to bubble near the top so it's easy to find.
I've been modifying my original post so that the file link there gets you to the current version. The subject line shows the last time the settings list was changed.

Some recent additions and a bump to top of the MAZ 18 section for now. I've not (yet) removed anything. jordanbunte suggested removing a couple submissions, and I will if he still wishes to. New submissions always welcome, but it may take me some time to get the file updated. Patience!

As described in my (modified) original post, here's a pdf version of the chart. Formatting is not ideal, but it should be easy to print!

I think there is a danger of information overload here! The earlier (i.e before today) chart that doctorice had kindly put together was extremely useful because of its simplicity and, for me, was very effective in opening up possibilities that I would probably never have thought of myself (for example, the Blackface option, which is amazing with my Les Paul with P90's). I suggest that too many options for settings could dilute the benefits of the table and should be included only if they can be identified with a very specific sound/tone category.

I understand, but I don't wish to make decisions on which contributions are included and which are not. At the moment, I've simply been adding pretty much everything that I catch for tone settings in chronological order. (The list probably is due for an update soon.) I'm open to suggestions. For example, should the list only include settings people actively submit and ignore those that crop up in posts? Would moving things around make it easier to use/find interesting settings? Here's a big one: should the list be expanded to include other Z amps? What say you MAZ guys and gals?

In a perfect world, I'd like it as spreadsheet but am not asking for that. What I have done is copied and pasted the settings into a spreadsheet and from there it is pretty easy to thin the list. When you add new settings to the end, it makes it easy to copy or add to my spreadsheet. Excel also allows me to do some limited filtering by setting. In the end, it's fine for me just the way it is. Thanks for keeping it updated. For the big question, the ghia is my other z amp, so I am fine either way on adding other zmps to the list.

I'm not sure whether this has been posted yet, but some of my favorite settings are... Keep in mind my cab is an Avatar open back 2x10 w/ a Celestion Greenback and Celestion G10 Gold... and my guitar of choice is my Benford Dual Cutaway w/ '57 Classic pups w/ 4-conductor wiring; push/pull on the tone pots to cut the output back and get tele/strat-like tones (basically a Les Paul w/ more options) AC30, just on the edge of breakup: MV: 9-10 Cut: 3 Bass: 10 Middle: 3 Treble: 1 Volume: 1:30 ... I used a Timmy to give it even more grit, and a Mad Professor SHOD to push it into full-on OD. And these settings REALLY allow me to cut through the mix. They even sound fantastic with my ash tele as well. cranked JCM800... really HUGE & dirty: MV: 10 Cut: 2 Bass: DIMED Middle: DIMED Treble: DIMED Volume: DIMED ... that's my absolute favorite setting so far, and it's really dirty of course. Just sounds HUGE and thick. Gives a really convincing Marshall tone. Granted with the 2x10, the low end's presence is felt a lot more than if I were running a 2x12, but it still sounds really good. The Celestion Gold sounds BEAUTIFUL on the AC30 settings... just glorious... and that's actually the setting I use more than any other, just gives me more versatility w/ my pedals an picking technique. It cleans up easier, but I use a hard pick attack, it gets dirty (the AC30 setting, that is).

My original post at the top of the thread has a link to the html file. Here is the same info as a pdf file, which may be easier to print.
If you want to contribute a new setting, please send it to me and/or post it here.
If I missed one of yours, send me the info in a PM, and I'll get it into the next release.

I forgot to mention that the tone stack bypass mod (TSM) hasn't cropped up a lot in settings. I think it would be great to have some suggestions that offer interesting combinations of sounds with TSM on and off, a form of pseudo channel switching, if you will.
I just played around with a setting that gave nice voicings for a Tele and will post after a second listen.

Frank and Andy,
Thanks, guys. I appreciate the opportunity to help out the community here. It's modest "payment" for what this place in cyberspace -- hope to make it real with Z Fest in 2011 -- has provided.
EXCEL. Now that I got your attention, one poster mentioned that he/she finds it useful to have this in Excel. It's very easy to do, at least on my Mac: Just open the file (downloadable in the original post) with Excel. It's all there.
NOTES. I have used the notes field for other information provided in posts, such as guitar(s) used, speaker configuration, which input jack and so forth. I encourage everyone sharing settings to mention these tone elements in their posts.
Cheers,
Mike

The PDF file opened up for me fine in EXCEL 2010... But not sure how to download/save the HTML file in the OP. Update...Just needed to click on the OP's link... Then use the advanced ' Save Page As' feature... Then open the saved file with Excel... I am a Pro now.
