Hey Zers,
I love the sound of the Z with the volume knob cranked...the distortion is so nice...I'd like to be able to get it without the volume knob cranked so I can have a clean sound and a dirty sound at the click of a switch...it'd also be cool to get a little more distortion out of the Maz. How well does a boost pedal work for this? Any recommendations for a good clean boost?
Thanks,
Mike

You should post this in the Effects section too. Tons of great boosts out there, i.e. Xotic RC booster, but also lots of pedals that are great for low/mild gain with volume boost like Tim and Timmy pedals, Barber Luxery Drive, Xotic BB preamp (a forum favorite), and so on.

Ditto's Skydog, RC for clean boost and Xotic AC for the overdrive.

Another vote for xotic AC, RC and BB. The Fulltone OCD is also on my board for a different flavor albeit a little redundant.
Thing I like about the xotic pedals is they stack so well together.

They stack well, but they're always in stock... no 8 week waits... Botique tone when you want it.

I have an AC booster for thicker tones and a Jeckyl and Hyde (mainly use the Jeckyl side) for Tube Screamer type overdrive. I have really come to love the Jeckyl and Hyde pedal. I know some people bash it, but if you like to keep your amp set for a bit of Plexi type grit for rhythm and then kick on the Jeckyl for drive and sustain, it really works well. It has a very flexible eq section and a bass boost if neccessary.

I think the J & H is a very good pedal. At the end of the day they're all just pedals and have more similarities in sounds than differences. I just bought a BB and can vouch for it.

Thanks guys..I've actually got OD and Dist pedals covered pretty well, though I'm interested in the BB for sure. What I'm really looking for is the best way to push the front end of the Maz into overdrive. It has a great sound that I can't get from pedals I've used. I just want it to give up the goods earlier/easier. Thanks!

Any compressor or graphic EQ pedal can be a clean boost. You might like one of the retro treble boosters.

I've tried, original 808 Tubscreamer, Old ProCo Rat, Voodoo Sparkle Drive, xotic BB and RC boost. My board currently has xotic BB and RC boost pedals only. The Tubescreamer and Rat seemed to cut out that cool Z bottom end so off the board they went.

Another one for xotics pedals. I find xotic products,AC,RC and BB that is, work really well with Z amps.

Xotic RC is really nice if you want tone shaping controls, potential OD/gain control and a typical boost in signal.
As another thought for a boost/slam for front-end drive, you should consider the Keeley Katana - it's a class-a boost clean until you pull out the knob and it becomes a transparent pre-amp offering a great kick-in-the-pants to the front of an amp - takes a clean amp into the purely amp oriented drive tones you're talking about. Fun pedal!
I have both - I replaced the Katana on my flight board with an RC for flexibility (ability to tone shape to help tweak signal when using backline); but, I kept the Katana on my bigger tour board to slam the following pedals and occassionally the front of an amp for natural tube drive.

You might want to try the Z vex super hard on it it TOTALLY transparent. It hits the front end of the amp really hard. It is my boost of choice.

I hear ya....
Luxury Drive and the Landgraff boost (very fat) along with the Keeley Katana are some of the BEST clean Boosts (or semi-clean as some can adda a little grit/ fat/ or sparkle themselves) I've ever tried...
Also now that I've played around with the Keeley Comp, it has a level control on it and you can kinda even use it as a boost to beef up your straight clean sound, while adding some spank/ sparkle...
there are a bunch of OD type pedals that you can set up more like a boost and less like an overdrive... the xotic's are good for this and even a klon could be used this way...
However, for Price vs. tone= BANG FOR BUCK... I don't think you can get a better straight up Boost Pedal than the LUXURY DRIVE and works wonderfully with Dr Z's.... at around 100.00 you can't beat what it does... nice sound. works great with the Maz Sr, BW uses one with his on occasion and would probably also recommend it to you, just as he did to me. Great pedal.

Thanks!

Thanks guys, we're getting somewhere now...I need to try some of these out...I have a boost I built, kind of a rangemaster clone, but it changes my sound too much....I've got buddies with the Xotic and Zvex stuff, so I can try that...I'll have to hunt down the others at NAMM...is Dr Z at NAMM this year?

Hey Stan...You read my mind. Where can I get these pedals,Jason? Especially,Landgraff boost. JB Where is Jason when you need em? Thats what my wife asks ALL the time... lol heres Tim Jauernig's website and you can order from him or go to one of his dealers (pedalgeek has em) if you can find one in stock... mysite.verizon.net/resoqx8o/id1.htmland YES the Luxury drive is DEFINITELY worth checking out and is not very expensive... one of the best boost pedals out there. pretty transparent, but does add a little something albeit GOOD something .... little luster/ sparkle ( LUXURY) whatever you want to call it, to your sound though... John Landgraff doesn't have a website but you can call him or e-mail him... I think his boost runs around 200.00 but I'm not sure... it is equally good and a little different than the Luxury drive... little fatter and a little more/ pretty darn transparent... your amp... just BIGGER and FATTER. very nice to fatten thinner sounding single coils... Johns Phone # is 1-850-341-2310 real cool guy, will talk your head off... ;D loves to talk tone... I have both of these boosts on my big board... I use them separately, with OD's and I also use them together... very cool. on my small board I have a BB in place of the Luxury.. I can set it as a pretty nice boost too/ lower OD, and use the Landgraff just a little more anyway... there are SO many good pedals being made right now it's just crazy... hey if Ya'll come to the DR Z gathering thats seems to be brewing... I'll bring these for you guys to try out.... be very cool for everyone to bring some unique things for everybody to try... Jason

Thanks, Jason. Any experience with the Gristle King? Its the lux boost plus the gristle tone whatever OD. I like that the boost and OD are seperate, not married like an FDII. I also like the idea of the pro/post gain switch for the boost...$209 for a dual pedal isn't bad either, relatively speaking (I build a lot of pedals and am sorta shocked at what guys charge, but thats a different show!)

I was looking for a Boost Pedal and a good Buffer for my pedal board (end of chain) and just got the MI Audio Boost'n'Buff. It's a great Boost AND Buffer pedal. And it's even more: from 0 to 12 it acts like a very transparent clean Boost; after 12 it works like a REAL Treble Booster. The pedal has 33 dB (!) of Boost available! You can also run it from 9 to 24 VDC for even more headroom... ;D www.miaudio.com/BNB1.htm

Yep... I got the Gristle King cause it had both the luxury Drive and the DGTM... which is also a good OD pedal... does a good tube screamer so I took the Keeley modded 808 off in favor of the GK. I loe that you can put the LD boost pre or post on that pedal, and if you put it in front and then hit the OD/ DGTM... nice or if I need a little boost for solo's and I'm using the Ghia, I've switched it to post OD... works well for a little solo boost. not a bad price at all... also has a phat switch for the OD side that works nice, and a toggle that makes it either more compressed/ or more open... pretty versatile pedal.

ProTone makes a little boost, the Thruster, that is pretty neat, and Pharaoh had a germanium boost called the Tone Engine that you may find for real cheap on eBay if you look long enough. The ProTone was funky and a little noisy but great for the price.
The Gristle King is very nice. I heard Koch using it live in a clinic he gave and the tones into a clean Fender were outstanding. I've had a few DGTMs and have a double wide version right now that kicks pretty well too.

Dr Z Mas 38 Reverb + Xotic BB preamp + USA Strat = Pure Heavenly Tone-the best. Even God has one of these....

I think Xotic should give us some discounts with as much as we tought their product. Don't get me wrong, we wouldn't be saying good things about them if wasn't true...
But man, you just can't go wrong. The RC - clean boost, AC - thick overdrive/boost and BB for that TS-9 distortion with a hint of comp at lower volumes. You just can't go wrong.
They're all under $200 and always in stock. How could you ever go wrong?

I personally like the NEW FDII. I can get a nice clean boost out of it and the drive kicks in a nice broken up distortion.

The pedal I loved with my old Maz Sr was the HBE Power Screamer. It melted perfectly with the clean tone of the amp.
I'll have another Maz soon, I might have to spring for another Power Screamer as well
