What is the consensus on the Z speakers that come standard with 1 -12 or 2 -10 combos. Are speaker upgrades just hair-splitting?

I think the 10's are great and I don't plan on changing them. It is personal taste, really.

The 12s are Celestions and there's room for improvement there. The 10s are REALLY nice. Recently at a posh nite club here I unhooked one of them in my 2 x 10 Z cab just to lower the db a bit. Two sounds a lot better than one but the one carried the gig just fine. One of these days I'm going to swap them out for some Webers or Tone Tubbies just so I can here if I prefer the alnico magnets over ceramics. Z's tens are top notch. He needs to make his own 12s like these 10s. I'm sure that's a 'one of these days' kind of project for him but I think it would be a great success. I think he uses the Celestion 12s because everyone knows Celestions are quality it's just cork sniffers like us that would like a better standard speaker.

I think the DR's 10's sound great. I believe they handle 75 watts peak per speaker, so they should last the life of my maz18 210. When I bought my amp I tried 112 and 210, found the 210's add a lil more sparkly spaciousness. Tried a Ghia 210 and a Ghia head with an open 112 cab and preferred the 210 combo as well. I think the 112 combo and cab had V30's or H30's. Not sure why I didnt like them as much as the 10's because I love the V30&H30 set in my Zbest. Maybe its just the different cab formats.
Tone is subjective, YMMV.

The Z 10's are in my 35 years of playing, some of the best sounding loudspeakers I've ever heard. Why possibly would I change something that Mike Zaite and Ted Weber have done so much work and research on, and gotten it right?
You're right. It's hairsplitting at the very best. Fashionable at the worst, and realistically unneccessary.
