First off as this is my first post I just want to thank everyone for all the useful information exchanged on this forum. I purchased a MAZ JR NR about a month ago and love it, but have struggled with getting a clean sound with any volume. I purchased the amp to play my strat through but ended up using my Les Paul mostly because it sounded awsome overdriven through the JR.
I dug out some NOS 5751 tubes I had stashed away and put one in the phase inverter position and WOW now I was getting more clean headroom and the amp still sounded awsome. I was surprised because I had tried these tubes in several other amps to tame them and it ended up making them sound enemic. I then put another one in V1 and I can't believe how much better this amp sounds. It is a little less touch sensitive but you can now get some very nice clean sounds and still crank it up and get the great overdriven sounds with a little more control. The bass it a little tighter and the treble a little smoother.
Anyone complaining about flabby bass should probably give this a try because it definitely makes a difference. YMMV

I use a 12AT7 in the phase inverter slot and have plenty of big, clean headroom with my Jr. I have tried 5751'a in PI and V-1, but the AT7 works best for me. YMMV.

I guess I'll have to give the 12AT7 a try also.
I was really amazed at the results of using the 5751's, I assumed it would give me more headroom but I also expected the amp to lose some of it's fullness as I experienced in other amps I had tried these in. I guess with the flexibility of the tone controls and the magic of the cut control you can easily compensate for it though.
