I had not changed the knobs/settings on my Maz Jr 2x12 in some time. I figured I got a good sound and leave it at that. I'm not a knob tweaker. (good name for a band...Knob Tweaker)
Volume: 11:00 Treble: 9:00 Mid: 1:00 Bass: 9:00 Cut: 9:00 Master: full
But for the past few days, I've had to attenuate quite a bit. And it seemed like the magic was missing. I figured I might be in need of new power tubes.
But I took the cut knob and turned it from 9:00 to 10:00....maybe 10:30...and WOW, the magic is back. crisp highs (not ice pick highs), articulation, percussiveness, expressiveness. Couldn't put the tele down. Probably have to counteract the attenuator.
I may have to run to Home Depot and get some more talent.

Sounds like it might be time for some new EL84s in the power section. I just swapped mine recently and I was amazed at how the highs came back. I suppose I was a little late with popping in the new tubes.
It does make sense that the cut knob would add some life into the rig as the tubes start to age.

I'm going to agree with fact tubes might need changing. Highs are the first things to go noticably when tubes weaken. Notice your treble is only at 9:00? With good tubes you should be able to go 12:00 with treble and virtually no cut with the same result in highs. And some of the muddy could be from the mids and high mids. Try taking that nasty midrange down to 10:00, bass and treble at 12:00, and turn down the cut control all the way ( after retubing).
The cut control, if the tubes are new, will "ice pick" unless you compensate by turning treble down. What we are doing is trading one source for another.
