My jr has a tube rattle most noticable when hitting a "G" . Driving me nuts !! Suggestions on where to look , I can't seem to pinpoint it . UPDATE.... OK... it was the 12ax7in the V1 position ( furthest from EL84's ) and is a JJ ECC83 S . While holding it in your fingers and tapping lightly it rattles terrable . What is the function of that tube , preamp ? I've got an old Sovtek in there for now but sounds harsh .

Have someone play your guitar and then use something to touch the tubes when the note is played. If you touch V1 and kind of dampen it and the rattle gets less or goes away then you will know that tube has an issue. You can do the same thing on the power tubes but beware of the very high temperature. You will need to dampen the tubes with something that will keep you from getting burned. Anyway be sure to test V1, the power tubes, and the Rectifier tube.

mine had what i swore was a tube rattle because i could touch or bump the pwr tubes and it would quit for a while. after i pulled the chassis, i ended up with 2 cold solder joint on the board where the wires go back to the pwr tubes. mine was either a G or A that made the most noise. a chop stick works well for poking around in the amp. good luck, chris.

I had a rattling glass tone coming from my MAZ also. I looked into those tube dampers but instead I bought a tube of hi-temp automotive silicone at an auto parts store and ran 3 rings or beads of the stuff around my power and recto tubes, one at the top, one in the middle and one at the base of the tube and my problem was solved, i even think it tightened up the bass response of the amp. EL84's. they don't call them buzz pencils for nothing. price of tube of silicone- $5 the tone from my MAZ without buzz pencil glass rattles- priceless.

george , there is just something about this,,, glass, heat, electricity, metal... that just doesnt seem right. maybe i am wrong or too chicken to try it. but something doesnt fit here. again, perhaps i dont want to mess around with a thousand dollar amp and 5$ of silicone, but, somethin dont seem right. i hope the problem you thought was solved doesnt come back to haunt you,,, but of course, you know all the chords

I was a little skeptical at first, but I consulted a few amp gurus and none of them saw anything wrong with this approach. You can spend big bucks for those teflon tube rings or $5 on a tube of silicone and they do the same thing. I've been running my amp with the siliconed tubes for about a year now with no adverse effects and improved tone. The rattling glass used to bug the **** out of me especially when playing at practice volumes, that's when you notice it more, I also did the silicone thing to my Princeton Reverb II and my Blues Jr. and have no rattling glass tones from them.

Interesting fix you suggest George and maybe worth a try....don't see what it could hurt if you apply and let cure with the tubes removed . I think it's V3 that is rattling though and I haven't been able to spent time with JR the last couple days but thanks for the suggestion guys . I'm going to try new output tubes too as soon as I can find a good source for GT here in Canada .

The preamp tube furthest from the output tubes is V1. Important to have a good tube there. Which one depends on what sound you want.

Thanks Billy , V1 would be a driver then ? I'll have to try a few different ones out . I was surprised that JJ has such a rattle .

The silicone worked for you? I have my tubes siliconed on all my amps, I recently had my blues jr in for repair and the tech noticed a strange reading on the O-scope and thought that it was the silicone so he removed it, turns out that it was the back panel shielding that was'nt installed on the amp that caused the reading, so when I got the amp back without the silicone on the tubes I got the rattles again. So far no amp guru has had anything negative to say about this. It works for me.
