I've been loving the tones I can get out of my new Maz 18 Jr (using a standard telecaster), but the only thing I can't stand is when I'm directly in front of the speaker...the highs are just so "chimey" that I'm blown away. I've tried turning the cut all the way down, as well as messing with my tone knob on the guitar, but it still is an issue.
Whenever I crank the amp though and wear earplugs (those etymotic research musician's plugs) it sounds fine, even when I stick my head in front of the speaker.
Are my earplugs acting like beam blockers, and would beam blockers be a good idea? I notice this issue with all my amps. Could I install a beam blocker on my own or is it better to have someone else do it? I have the 1x12 by the way.
Thanks.

how do you have the amp eq'd? where do you set the treble, mid, and bass?

I put a pair of beam blockers in my 2x10 cab because I was having the exact same problem. They work like a charm and are easy to install. Just get a phillips head and pop the speaker off, put the beam blockers on the baffle board and screw the speaker back down. Piece o' cake - plus they're only like $15.

A cheap guitar cord can do that. Those standard teles can have pretty 'hard' sounding pickups too. I do like the beam blockers myself. Makes the sound spread real nice and zero tone change.

Can you go into more detail about these beam blockers? What they are? how they work? price? etc.... thanks THEY WORK! and they will solve the problem villageidiot ( I love that name!)is having.... also could switch to Weber or other brand speakers to smooth that out ( change to webers worked for me with the 12" speakers)... but beam blockers should work... had the same problem in my ghia 2x10 combo and didn't want to change speakers ( love the Z 10" speakers), sooo installed beam blockers= problems solved and NOW I can tilt/ angle it right at my head CRANKED playing with my LOUD band and I can hear it easily with no harshness... Strato, you can go to the Weber web site but basically they are a metal strip you connect across the front of your speaker ( installs very easy using one speaker screw on each side of the speaker)... In the middle is what looks like the center cone of a speaker and is also the same SIZE of the center cone of your speaker..... it faces backwards towards the speaker/ cone towards the speaker... it deflects the harsh laserbeam type sound coming from the center and disperses it out... you can also hear a little better off center because of this which is a very good by product of killing the ice-pick... and they really do WORK.... ;D Jason

doc has been addressing this issue...look at his notes. It involves changing out v1 and v2 with a different tube

A problem with the Jr is that all the controls - ALL the controls - work very very well. So if you add highs, which is right and normal, life is good. Now you mess with the cut control, and turn it up to get MORE high end...now we're into ice pick territory. If rolling up some highs, DON'T over indulge the cut control. Forget tubes, forget beam blockers... I'm not saying they're not any factor at all... BUT the ice pick effect many times with many guys is double dipping with the treble and cut. And that's self inflicted damage, my friends.

Change out the ECC83 tubes for Svetlana 12AX7s, get the beam blockers and wait for the speakers to get broken in. That'll work.

Turn on the toggle marked "ON" but leave the one marked " Standby" in the down position. This leaves very few beams to be blocked, and virtually no hiss.

I also installed the Weber Beam Blockers on my 2X10 Maz Jr like johnny did, this worked very well.

I had to chime in here---I play my strat mostly and it too is high sounding. Every Dr Z amp I played it through comes out very high with the bridge pickup. I found that I roll off the tone knob on my strat and that fixes the situation everytime. This is the case with most boutique amps with my strat. Since you play a tele, I'm sure it's worse---so try to roll of the tone a tad!
FYI---If recording with a mic'd amp, leave the highs in there as Dr Z's amps record beautifully!!! It'll sound high in the room, but the recording will have a perfect high-low balance.

I put in a set of Webers and the "harsh" top end went away (were G12H30s before - a favorite speaker but a bit aggressive in the amp).
Have a set of 12" beam blockers in the closet that I didn't get around to trying. Might later w/another amp if the need arrises. Friend used them and it really solved the bright/directional issues w/his amp (spent a lot of time with the amp before and after). Great tool!

BTW I use Fralin's Woodstock pups. Or you could get Jason Chance to use your amp for a night, he'll break your speakers in for you...you'll need to increase the treb/cut a little after he's done

+1 on the Beam Blockers. They made both my amps (not Z's) sound like they had new speakers. Great product.
