Proud new owner of a maz jr nr here. I could not be happier with my new head. I have one question for those more experienced. I am using my head through a marshall 4x12. I have not noticed anyone else using a 4x12. Am I missing out on anything here? I do not own another cab to try it through and I normally play small bars in a few rock cover bands. Thanks in advance, David.

Congrats man! As long as you match up the impedance at 4 or 8 ohms you can easily drive a 4x12 cab with this head. I like a 2x12 configuration because it's easier to haul around and plenty loud enough for any gig around here.

That makes since - I guess the cost of these things somewhat limits its users to being a little older and therefore more unable to lug around a 4x12. haha. David

Most guys use a Marshall 4 x 12 more for the looks than the sound.

Are you trying to tell me that I am a poser? First, welcome to the forum shugaboy... and Nah.. I don't think billy's saying that... I think what he's saying is that most guy's use certain equipment because of looks or cause some other guy used this rig or that guitar... but just cause you play a strat and use a marshall head into a 4x12 cab doesn't mean your trying to be Hendrix.... it's NOT really about WHAT your playin on.. It's about WHAT YOUR PLAYING... and how it sounds... it's all about tone! and whatever it takes to achieve good tone... part in the fingers.. part the guitar... part amp... part of it is that sound you've got in your head... whatever it takes to achieve it... it's an ongoing struggle for me... but I'm working on it! thats why most of us play DR Z! it's about the tone like no other. but alot of what I feel is this vibe from some folks that you can't play a certain TYPE music unless you have a particular TYPE gear... which I don't like... I feel like if you have a MAZ SR 1x12 combo you can cover just about anything under the sun ( w/ right pedal)regardless of what anybody say's... BUT hey if it takes an old 8x10 marshall cab with a marshall major head to get the sound your after go for it... or a big ole Matchless 4x10 chieftan.... or a tweed bassman... or a Mini Z... an OLD SUPER... whatever cranks your tractor and gets you to your "happy place" ;D My other guitar player in the blues band plays a plexi through a early 1970 Mrshall 4x12 cab loaded with 80 watt Webers.. MAN that AMP cab COMBO sounds great... just like what you'd think... the only reason I don't like it is that cab is SUCH a laser beam... beam blockers would be great in it... nothing else sounds quite like a good amp through a 4x12 cab.... and I also have to compete with that, I don't think he realizes how loud it is sometimes cause all that sound is going PAST him... I bet that 18 watt Maz Jr sounds great through that cab and not to loud at all cause it's working so hard to push those 4X12's... nice and thick with a lot of woof!! " it's your thing...do what ya wanna do..."oh... BTW we ARE mostly old farts that can't/ don't wanna lug around a 4x12 cab..... nothing to do with money..more to do with my aching back... hey Billy...pass me the BC powder!! ; D ;D Jason

I love old Marshall 4-12 cabs, but it actually, literally wouldn't fit on half the stages I'm playing on now! Half the time I barely have room to not bump cymbals. It sucks big time. Our venues are disappearing at a rate of knots. I bet your set up sounds great. Nice way to get the Maz sounding more "British" or Brown. I think Billy is refering to the younger guys who see quads on TV and figure it's the only way to go. It cracks me up whenever I see the young guys with their giant amps with a hundred buttons sitting on a giant quad like it should be played in a stadium and then I plug in the 66 and Zbest and TOTALLY AND LITERALLY, blow them off stage. Their rigs just seem to disappear into white noise. They kinda look at me like I'm cheating or something! "How many watts is that?" "32" "yeah right...more like 132" "no, it's just called tone kid" ;D

Most guys use a Marshall 4 x 12 more for the looks than the sound. With my son it's a little bit of both. He and his band want a BIG sound and the 1960AX delivers. He also wants the LOOK...no question, once again it delivers. I hauled it out last weekend for a gig, wow that is one powerful beast, lots more horsepower than I need...but it was a blast for sure. Like Jason alluded to, my ole back is more about hauling around my little Z 1x12 cab. ;D Otherwise I can only imagine how good a Maz Jr or Ghia, etc, would sound through my sons 4x12. I DID throw the 'ray up on the big beast for a quick little test...and IT was voiced better through the single alnico Weber IMHO.

shugaboy: You're no more a poser than I was when I used a Marshall 1/2 stack. I wanted a full-on rock sound and look and nothing says that better than a marshall 4 x 12 box. Also most of the Marshall 4 x 12 boxes have the 12-75s, mine did, mediocre speakers. The Valvestate 4 x 12s have cheaper speakers yet so there are lots of better sounding cabs. I imagine a Z Best with 2 x 12s would sound better than a standard Marshall 4 x 12 and it wouldn't have that "4 x 12" sound from the partial phase cancellation that those cabs have. Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum!

Thanks guys - I have only recently been able to afford a head like my Z. My cab is borrowed and has been to hell and back but sounds sweet. I have recently upgraded from a Crate VFX5212. I appreciate everyones comments and if you are ever in NC hit me up or come see one of my bands. Thank you, David

I'm 35 years old BUT I'm also thinkin down the road... what do I want to be lugging around and what would I be comfortable with... I just wanna keep playin... and make it easy/ fun as it can be as to not discourage myself/ other band members from doing it...
but I STILL have to compete soundwise with the other guitar players setup... at practice I just use my 2x10 ghia... and I love it! but I prefer the Stingray live... just a little bigger sounding tonewise.... Z-best easily keeps up with the other guitar player but that thing is not exactly real EASY to lug either... but it sounds great... at least a 4x12 has the wheels... ;D
