I know this might seem like overkill, but I've considered this and am wondering if anybody does this(?).
Using my 35th Anniversary Carmen Ghia at home/practice levels, I often find myself running the Master Volume quite low (~9:00) with the Volume set at a pleasing low/moderate breakup (~10:30). Am I crazy for wanting to open up the Master some more... let the amp & power tubes breathe a little bit more?
Seems like "diversifying" a little by shaving off some of the volume with the Master and a little more with a Brake Lite couldn't be a bad idea. What say you about using all-Master-Volume to cut the loudness vs. using the Master + attenuator?

For the most part, I'm usually in favor of running the power tubes as hot as possible. So personally, I would attenuator first, master second...or a combination of the two.
I know Doc's master volumes are better than a lot of the crappy MV used in the 70's (which is where my opinion of MV came from)...but I still like to push the power tubes.

I am like John and I like to run my power tubes as hot as possible so I use both the MV and a Brakelite often. In particular I use it with my Z28 MKII, I like running the 5881s as hot as possible. I have not used it with my 35th Anniversary Ghia but could easily see doing it at some point. I do love my Ghia!

I tried it with my Carmen Ghia and liked using just the master better. I run it similar to your settings.

I'd say give it a try, Mark, if you haven't already.
My experience has been that my Zs with PPIMV don't "open up" until the master is above 9 o'clock. I don't think it's just due to the amp driving the speaker more, although that could be part of it.

I use AirBrake and BrakeLite with my MV Remedy. It gives more options for tone and volume control. I haven’t used them as much with my Nova as I find the MV works well to control the volume. I have been thinking about trying it again to see if it would give more tonal options. ME

All things in moderation. Heavy use of either a MV or attenuator will change tone. A bit of each will render better results.

Nothing wrong with using a BL or AB with any Z amp. The Cure has 3 volume controls, so why not ?
Heck, sometimes I use a BrakeLite with my Maz 8. It gives you more options.
Sometimes I like to run both volume controls above 12:00 o'clock. That can get a bit loud in the living room. A couple clicks on the BL, and Bob's your uncle.
