An eye opening or point of consideration for me is Tom’s comment about hating to hear “the clean tone coming through.” It’s the third time he said that in the video so far. I have never been a big user of dirt pedals; obtaining my dirt from the amp. Back in my days with my plexi that meant huge volume. So then drive pedals entered my world. I’ve typically used them to add a little hair (transparent OD idea). I always wanted to hear my clean tone with a little edge. Tom’s comment and his shootout in the video got me thinking a little differently. I’ve never got on with fuzz, but I’m going to explore my gain and tone settings on the few drives I have. Typically I’m gain lower than volume on the pedal and try to keep tone close to the amps clean tone. Now I’m going to explore the knobs a little more on my Timmy, Gain Changer, Small Fry etc. I’d love to hear others’ approach to their drive pedals.

Pedals like amps have sweet spots. I tend to set my OD pedals lower gain and then stack them for higher gain sounds. There seems to be a point on the pedal gain that starts to get fizzy. I run my Z-Plus and Ghia near breakup in a wet dry setup.. So adding one OD brings it over the edge. Adding a second then gives it more thickness and compression.
As for fuzz, I have a BC183 Sun Face from Analogman. It cleans up beautifully. I can use it clean then tweak the volume knob to get more hair or go full Jimi.

Typically, I liked to have the amp start to get "hard" a little with gain... whether by volume or preamp gain... then use a pedal level the rest of the way. My mentality has been the same whether OD or fuzz.
Ever since getting the Z28 MkII, I've had to relearn my gain pedals and, subsequently, added more on my board that would normally just be sitting around waiting for justification to use them LOL! My primary OD pedals are a KoT and a germanium OCD. I've turned the gain down on the OCD and the level up a hair more and gotten an even better tone. Same with the KoT, but a bit more drastic of a change. I've actually been using LESS overall gain with that pedal and the clean boost sounds even better now!
I have an low-gain NKT Red Dot Sunface and haven't changed a single setting between my Helios Eclipse and the Z28 and it sounds absolutely glorious!!!

My amps too are set to edge of break up. My guitar lives between 5-7 on the volume so getting about 8 give or take puts a nice edge on things and when open full gets the amp cooking pretty good. Depending on the pedal those volume changes can have a huge effect. There will be some interesting experiments taking place in the next several weeks.

However I’m not a a session, guy, so I get to call the shots …..lol
