I'm headed out to trade a guitar that I no longer use for a G&L ASAT Special! I think the first thing I'll do when I get home is warm up the Cure!

Congratulations. I think you are really going to like those big MFD pickups (I was less of a fan of the Strat sized MFD;s). I had one in red metalflake with a matching headstock for a couple of years.

I have an ASAT Special, but I replaced the stock pups with Lollar Vintage T's. After watching "Ask Zac's" recent post re G&L it has me wishing I hadn't. It's still a great guitar though! Oh yeah, and it sounds wonderful through my Cure.

You guys are impatient! I just got home with it about an hour and a half ago.
The guitar is in great shape- barely a scratch! But it was dirty and had crusty old .011-.049" strings, the strings were tarnished, the jack was dirty and cutting out (it may need to be replaced). Even in that condition, I could tell it'd be a good guitar. I cleaned it all up, put my usual .009-.042" strings on it, set it up (the truss rod was responsive) and it plays and sounds great! The pickups are bright and percussive- good with a Princeton Reverb, awesome with the Cure.
It came with a cool set of Rio Grande Big Bottom alnico magnet pickups if I ever decide to go that route. I already have a couple of good traditional Teles and wanted something a little different.
Don't mind the glare from the skylights.

Looks like 1 piece ash body. Very cool.

Looks like 1 piece ash body. Very cool. It does, but it's not- it's a very nicely matched 2 piece body.

That’s a beauty. I have an ASAT Special, USA I found at a pawn shop a number of years ago. It’s a powerful beast with a nice beefy neck. They are nice guitars. Mine isn’t nearly as pretty as yours. Enjoy. Congrats.

That's sweet, dude! It must be just a couple years before mine, back when they did the transparent finishes on ash bodies + rosewood fretboards (mine is alder body + pau ferro--still nice, but not as gorgeous as yours).
Let us know what you think of those pickups. I was very surprised to realize that mine don't seem to act like P90's at all. In fact, they seem to sound identical to the very "vintage" Tele single coils on my other Fender. (Which is a good thing, I think?) Just very surprising for large-aperture ceramic-magnet pickups like the MFD's, compared to vintage AlNiCo single coils. Must be part of Leo Fender's genius modern design!

Because of their soap bar shape they are often mistaken for P-90s but they are quite different animals. I think I've owned every color of G&L metal flake except silver and green at one time or another.

I’ve always wanted one of those sparkle finishes. I have two ASAT USAs and love them. Beautiful guitar there, enjoy it!

I've had a few of "Tribute" series models with the MFD pickups (Classic and Special) over the past 20 years.
I recently picked up an American ASAT with the AlNiCo pickups. I typically like/prefer really fat "baseball bat" necks, but thinner neck profile on the ASAT is really easy to play! The AlNiCo pickups sounded pretty good, LOTS of twang, but were pretty low output compared to my other guitars. I swapped those out for some SD LaBrea pickups, which work better for me.
GREAT guitars, congrats!
