A big shout out to Todd and Joshua at Greenville Pickups / PCNS.
Back in the late '70s I pulled the original bridge pickup out of my 1968 Les Paul Custom and replaced it with something else. I had previously taken the cover off my pickups and had changed the alnico magnets to ceramics for more output. The bridge pickup ended up failing and it went into a drawer. It stayed there for 43 years.
So last summer Todd and Josh were visiting me and I got to thinking about that old pickup, and asked Todd if he could restore it for me. He took it with him and a couple of weeks ago he brought it back. I guess the wire that joins the two coils together had opened up, so he fixed that, put a new braided cable on it, and installed a short length alnico 5 magnet in it. Monday I installed it into my #1 Les Paul style guitar, my beloved Heritage Custom Core H-150.
I'm blown away. This is the pickup that was with me for 13 years way back in the '70s and now it's singing again. It's unpotted and it is so responsive that when driven hard it kind of sounds like that fabulous "amp on the edge of blowing up" tone...just a super alive and harmonically rich, fat yet sweet lead tone. Played clean it sweetens right up. No ice pick tone, just a terrific bridge pickup.
I have one of Todd's Suspicion pickups in the neck slot and the two really sound great together in the middle position. It has taken my favorite LP guitar from being a really good guitar to being an over the top great guitar. I can't set it down.
So thanks, Todd and Josh...it's great having friends like you. Here's a couple of pictures, I think it looks really cool with one open coil pickup.

That is a really cool story, amazing how that all worked out. A little jealous of the amps behind the guitar though. And yes, unspotted pickups are really cool too.

I am working in duplicating the tone from the T tops. I have a set in my '73 LP Custom that I just love.
