I've heard that the EF86 is prone to being microphonic. Have any of you experienced this ?

Right. I thought the reason ef-86 wasn’t used much was cause the microphonic issue…..

I have the wonderful EF86 in my Z-28 Mk II, Matchless and Bad Cat amps. I have no microphonics in any amp. I use NOS Amperex and maybe that has somthing to do with it. I don't know. But, I have never had a problem with the EF86. LOVE IT.

It’s been said already but I’ll add that my Z28ii combo is just fine. I can hear the tubes clicks warming up but nothing I would consider a problem. Pretty much goes away once warm. Just love to largeness of th ef86. If I ever buy another amp after owning the Z28ii it’ll be an ef86 front end.

What brand comes with the amp ? JJ NOS Winged C EF-86, I believe 1980’s production. They are a meaty, full toned EF86.

It could have been the layout in older Vox amps that caused microphonics. In the Z-28 MKII, the tubes are above the speaker in a horizontal position. they aren’t getting blasted my the speaker in that orientation. I believe in the older VOX AC 15, they were right behind the speaker.

As soon as I get an amp with EF86, I pull the stock tube and install a NOS Amperex Bugle Boy. So, I can't speak the to tube the Doc installs. However, if Doc Z is shipping the amp, I don't think you have to worry about the tube quality.

No problems with microphonics here either.
Incidentally, with Z amps I've done a terrific amount of tube rolling and I invariably end up with the stock tubes in place. Doc knows what he's doing.

I have not had any problems with my Z-28 head which is 11 years old. Nor my Z-28 Mk II which is a little over a year old.
