Hey gang
Sent my ghia out for mv update today. I’m looking for a suggestion on speaker. Selection. I’m making a cabinet while the amp is away and I’m new to choosing speakers. Does anyone have any insight for me? I have it plugged into a 2x12 with alnico silver bell and blue dog speakers. Sounds great but this ghia needs its own cab. (2x12 is for a jtm45 I made).
Open to suggestions. What’s popular and why??

Who what’s to follow this guy ^^^^. LOL It’s super hard to get away from a Celestion for most Z’s. I don’t think you can go wrong with the Greenback unless you need higher headroom, in which I would go with the first post. I would like to throw out the one speaker that is in the middle of the V30 and the Greenback and that is the VType. If your like “Ah, I really don’t like the V30, and the Greenback isn’t enough” the VType is something I would try. I have both the 10” and the 12” among my ever growing and embarrassing speaker harem .

I’m not going to second guess the good doctors recommendations😂 (but) I have a 2x12 that has a Tone Tubby Chicago Blue and a Tone Tubby Black Beauty (ceramic prototype) I plugged the Ghia in and they’ve never been apart. Also tried it with a Weber Blue Alnico and. Jensen but like the TT combo My suspicion is the Ghia sounds darn good through just anbout anything though.
Really wonderful amp especially given the simplicity of two controls. I think everyone who tries an amp is chasing a “sound”. Dr Z is its own sound. Once you accept this the true magic starts. Also a solid pedal platform IMHO. I use a DMBL to throw some mid growl in there from time to time.

I’ve actually never had a v30 cab before so I don’t really know what to expect. They were always the gold standard when I was a kid, and i know guys who’ve had them but I’ve never personally owned any.

I have several z amps but I can’t put this thing down! lol. I even had my neighbor over to off my dr z amps and he said to me today the ghia wrecked his world and now he’s rethinking amps haha.

As Doc said, speaker choice/tone is very subjective. What one person may like, another may not....even if they're playing the same guitar, same room, same music. There is no right or wrong.
For years, the V30 has been spoken highly of as a good match for the Ghia. I never used a V30 with my Ghia. But I had a specific tone I was going for. (That, and the fact it was a 1x10 combo) A 10" gold worked the best for me.
As for matching a 2nd speaker with the V30, the G12H30 seems to be a good match. The two speakers are voiced quite differently. The V30 has a hugh upper mid spike in tone...at the expense of bass/treble. The G12H30 on the other hand has recessed mids, but accents the bass/treble. They're both 100db speakers so one won't drown out the other.
A greenback (my favorite speaker) is only 98db...a bit less volume for the same amount of power. The V30 should be a bit dominant in volume. That's not to say it will completely drown out the greenback, but it won't be equal. Sometimes a 2nd less db speaker adds just enough tone difference to be desirable, where equal would be too much. Again, there is no right or wrong. A 2nd speaker doesn't have to be equal db, it doesn't have to be the same speaker. It's all up to the player.

I’ve had two 1-10 combos and I preferred Greenbacks in both.

A V30 and a Creamback M65 in a 2x12 also works very well with a Ghia.

What kind of sound do you like? Crunchy? Clean? Mellow? Rocky?
For me, I've settled on the Greenback being my speaker. I play mostly rockin' blues music with some good crunch. I like the 'craaaang' that you get from the Greenback. When I hear myself on a recording, I'm like "That's my sound". I had been messing with a Tone Tubby Alnico. That's a real nice sound. But, it wasn't me.
I did dial up the V30 in my UA Ox today. It has a nice front present sound. I can understand why Doc likes it.

The designed sweep of the unique tone control of the Ghia follows the V 30's frequency curve response.

Ironically, it dawned on me that I've never really tried it in my 1x12 cab with the Ghia. I suppose I'll have to swap it in next rehearsal. Cool!
