When faced with the task of playing on a silent stage with no backstage area to mic real amps, I picked up a Helix and started messing with it. At first, I used the Helix for everything it had (amp, reverb, delay, modulation, drives). I never could get it "just right." I threw a pedalboard in front of it and just used the amp and speaker cab modeling. It was an improvement, but still never got there. After a few years of this, I was finally able to get an amp backstage and mic it up. I went with the Jetta miced with an sm57 and an affordable ribbon. It instantly sounded amazing. Everything immediately worked the way it should! No harsh frequencies, it smoothed everything out. Thick and detailed bottom end was there without any flub or odd overtones. Controllable volume. Pedals boosted and compressed in such a satisfying way. Picking dynamics all came back. Just amazing.
I'm not hating on the Helix either. It's a nice peice of gear for what it is. It's another tool, there if you need it. However, there is absolutely no replacement for a top of the line real tube amp.
A great amp is the most impact you can make on your tone. More than any guitar or pedals or modeling device. Must must must have a great amp!
