Has anyone tried using a Sovtek 12ax7LPS for the last tube in a ZPlus. Dr. Z usually uses a long plate tube for the phase inverter. I know the last tube in a ZPlus is not a phase inverter, but it is the tube just before the power tubes. And I was thinking the amp might have a little more overdrive if a higher gain tube was used in that position.

Well, to answer my own question, I tried it and I didn't like it. I tell you what I did like though. The two Tung Sols were a little bright and gainy for me. So I tried a Mullard cv4004 in V1, and Svetlanas in v5 and v5 (reverb recovery and phase inverter). And I really like the tone with the first volume knob all the way up. If you like a softer warmer tone with smoother overdrive (I'm also using a strat and the Creamback speaker), that might work for you as well....

I replaced the Tung Sol tube in V1 with JJ ECC83 MG as a test and found it to be a bit smoother and less bright, which I like. The JJ ECC83 MG is a mid gain tube between the 83s and long plate 803s. My JJ tube supplier Eurotubes, out of Oregon, suggested avoiding long plate JJ tubes like the 803s in combos as they are more susceptible to vibration. The 83s is the highest gain.
Which speaker do you have in your Z-Plus? I have the Z-12.

I have the creamback. I feel like the Mullard Cv4004 are less bright options to the Tung Sol 12ax7. The Svetlana may also have less gain. But otherwise they look and sound similar.
I ended up just subbing the Svetlana in V1. Right now I have everything else the way it came from the factory.
