So I find it hard not to be a fan of Pete Anderson’s playing and tone. The tone is so distinctive, and easily replicated because of his short signal change and bare bones approach. When Eminence came out with the Hemp Dog I wanted to try it but was already playing amps with EV Style Speakers with lighter magnets. I also thought in the back of my mind that I really love the Tone Tubby 40/40 and an EV so would this be really good or am I just trying to talk myself into buying it? Well the run didn’t last terribly long and Covid did a number on Eminence so the Hemp Dog was out of production and prices jumped up, until recently. The Hemp Dog is back and I found an original run for $128 shipped so I bought it. At first it’s like an EV, they have this ominous tone right off the bad that is just big, it’s different, and has to be felt as well as heard. With my Z28 and the current pedals that I’m using I wasn’t knock over by the tone, nor was it horrible. I guess I didn’t know what to expect. What I did hear is how quick it recovered after the note attack, how articulate chords and picking came through, and how harmonics kind of popped like compressor. Introduce pedals like the STO (ODR) and the tone was ok. After walking away from it, and coming back that neck day I changed out the STO for a Reverend DriveTrain, something with a bit more mids and that really did it. That little light went on, that this speaker was great for being able to allow you to sculpt the tone with midrange, without becoming harsh in the upper mids or muddy. Country to Roots Rock, low gain to mid gain I think the Hemp Dog shines. I had a lot of fun with it today, and its going to be in rotation for sure.
