I love my Z Plus, but I'm finding that, with single coil pickups, I have to have the volume dimed to get even moderate breakup.
I'm trying to avoid pedals. I know that the tone stack bypass will give me some oomph, but I'm trying to avoid that as well. (Pedals and I don't get along too well.)
Should I experiment with different 12AX7s in V1?
Does anyone have any other ideas, or any very different experience with getting the Z Plus to break up?
Thanks.

A Y split cable into the both inputs should increase front end gain. You can also simply put a patch cable that isn't connected to anything in the bypass boost input and have it permanently bypassed that way.

Also, the tung sol in V1 is a lower gain 12ax7, so you can experiment with it (try finding a RUBY HG, out of production), but the other options I've suggested will result in more gain than a v1 change.

Thanks, frankie. I've tried a couple of other 12AX7's that I had around, and it didn't make much difference. Maybe I should look for a hotter one. Mesa used to market 12AX7s of different "colors" (I think they were JJ's).
I'll try the Y idea.
As I understand it, if I leave a cable in the bypass boost input, I'll lose the use of the tone controls, which isn't ideal. But I'll give it a try.

Experiment with preamp tone levels.

Why are you avoiding the tone stack bypass? That's the key to unleashing a Z-Plus. I use it quite often. It transforms the amp.
