Hello Everyone!
I've been keeping my eye on the local classifieds for a while now hoping to find a Z Best cab. One finally came up but it's the older 60-65lbs model. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with both the older and newer models? Is the sound pretty much the same, just a weight difference?
They are using poplar ply now, but I assume they were using Baltic birch before?
Thanks.

I don’t know what kind of ply they were using before nor now, but I have had a couple of what I’m sure were the older versions.
I took them apart just to see which speakers were in them, and I was surprised to find that even bought new they weren’t always the same from one to the next. Interestingly though, at least to my tin ears they always sounded exactly the same which left me to conclude that the actual drivers weren’t the biggest factor in the equation. And that sound was like angels fluttering out of the sky coming down to sing.
I’ve unfortunately aged out of the Z-Best and now think about 1x10s, but if you can handle it I say just get one. I never heard a better cab.

Hey thanks for the reply and the welcome!
I'm a bit suspect of the newer lighter woods manufacturers are using. I had an Orange PPV212V that uses their new 15mm ultra light ply and I put a few dents it in just with light bumps from other gear. My older birch cabs while heavy, are looking immaculate. I suppose since I'm not planning to move it around the extra weight won't be an issue.
I got a reply on TGP saying the newer models have a "more detailed midrange". Would be curious to hear from others that might have had experience with both models.
Thanks!

Frank (frankie here on Z Talk) works for Dr Z. He is a guitarist and has good ears. He might be able to share his thoughts. You can send him a private message (PM) via the message section of this forum.
Welcome aboard.
