Just curious about what Power Tubes you guys use with your Carmen Ghia?? I know the 35th uses the 6n14n. I have a back up set of JJ's. Is the 35th optimized for the 6n14n? Thinking of ordering a set from Rogue 8? Any advice Dr. Z??

The Ghia hasn't changed it circuitry in 35 years. JJ also sound excellent in the Ghia, a touch more CLANG in there tone ( i.e. more upper mid bit ). 6n14n's are just a bit warmer and richer sounding to my ear , work well with the MV, and last almost forever in a Ghia. Having recently acquired a 2013 Carmen Ghia head to go with a Shorty 2x10 that came my way, First Z amp, and one I have wanted to try for a long time; it occurs to me that I might have a use for some NOS GE 6BQ5s I have had waiting for an amp. Has anyone had any experience with GEs in a Ghia? Of course, these came to me unmatched. I suppose I’ll find a pair with the amp by checking Biasing numbers. Iirc, there are six or seven of these NOS GEs in my stash. Gotta try them, I suppose. I have been meaning to check the tubes in the amp. I also have some NOS JAN GE 5751s from the late ‘50s. I have been getting to know the amp as it is, but it is time to experiment now. I also want to see if there is a conjunctive filter in this amp while I am in there.

When I had my Ghia, it came with JJ....then one of them broke (literally broken glass) I replaced them with 6n14n.
I kind of freaked me out that the 6n14n took a lot longer to warm up. You notice those things on an amp that doesn't have a stand by. Turns out it's not a bad thing...just different.
But as Doc said, the JJ were a little more of the upper mid push. The 6n14n were a little more beefy. Not quite as much compression and a little more muscular feeling/sounding. Neither is better than the other. Just different.
I'm not a tube rolling person. I just want to play guitar. When I've tried switching tubes in amps in the past, most of the time I can't hear a difference. But with this switch in the Ghia, yes, I could finally hear and feel a difference. Not much, but it was there. And you had to play at stage volume to hear/feel the difference.
It's been a few years, but now that I remember back...If given a choice, I would take the JJs for that upper mid boost. But I chose the 6n14n replacements for reliability reasons. (not knowing there would be a difference.) When you're playing a gig with a drummer/bass player...you're really not going to notice the difference.

I’ve tried every production EL-84. JJs and TADs are my favorites.
I once emailed Dr Z several years ago inquiring about the NOS 6n14ns for the Ghia and was told the doc prefers the JJs!!
Will have to try now that they are recommended!!

I have a 2016 Ghia 112 Combo on the way : ) Loaded with a V30 (thanks John/motobum) ztalk.proboards.com/user/4427It is not a Master Volume model, and I am wondering what the good doctor recommends for power tubes (JJ EL84s or 6N14N). Or is it just what one's ear prefers?

And at this stage of game in 2024, the stash of 6n14n we have are more reliable and screened more vigorously by us than the JJ. As always, YMMV.

Outside of the 6n14n, the NOS arena is precarious at best. To quote Doc, “We’re down to seeds and stems”.
