Got a Remedy coming this week. I had a non MV 10 plus years ago. The inbound Remedy has MV, EQ bypass and all the upgrades..
Is it true I can run 5881's in it when it's time for a tube change? I know they're more watts than a 6V6, but what about the tone difference? I remember the midrange being strong with the 6V6's in it (which I like).
Any advice is much appreciated....

I had a red non MV for about a year. It is safe to use 5881's as a direct replacement. They allow a little more head room, I think I have a video, I will look. BV

5881s are not all the same. The original vintage Tung Sol 5881s are incredibly toneful and sweet. I imagine those would really sound good in a Remedy. 6l6wgbs are essentially subs for 5881s and there are some glorious ones out there by Sylvania and others. These small bottle 6l6/5881s sound nothing like a big 6l6gc to my ears. But, they are way louder than a 6v6.

If 5881's sound similar to a 6V6 that's good with me. I know they have more/better midrange than a standard 6L6GC. I've always preferred a 5881 to a 6L6..

I've used 5881's in my MV Remedy for a couple of years now, after seeing Dr. Z's recommendation to use them if more clean headroom is desired. Unlike many, I found the Remedy to be a fantastic crunch and overdrive vehicle, but I never found much at all in the way of clean tones. The 5881's definitely give more clean headroom. Now I'm ready to go back to 6V6's because I've got other amps for good clean tone. Let the Remedy be a Remedy!

I decided to leave the JJ 6V6's in mine. After some shows and a recording session this amp does exactly what I need it to. The MV drive/gain from the Remedy is brilliant. Been the only amp I'm currently playing thru and don't see that changing..
