Paging Dr Todd pcns to the OR. Or any knowledgeable folks! I’ve got a single coil on which the hair-thin wire from I believe the bottom of the windings that goes to the black wire has broken. I have some similar gauge copper wire. Can I solder splice a bit to reconnect the broken wire? If I make a solder point (blob) on the plate to connect the wires would that work? If so, should I cover the joint with tape, silicone, etc.? Thanks in advance for any help. See photo

You can try soldering a blob but it's hard to get the solder to stick to the thin wires.
You may have better luck getting a piece of copper foil and use that as a back stop for the solder. Plain enamel wire is hard to solder too. I have a hard time repairing that wire because the heat needed to melt the coating will often times break the wire.
If you can sand the wire to expose the copper that will help.
If you want to mail it to me I'll fix it for you. Just pay for your shipping both ways.

One more thing, you might be lucky here. that break may be at the end of the coil so you may be able to unwind the wire a turn or two to get some extra wire to work with.
If you can do that then you can re attach the wire to the solder eye on the bobbin.

Many thanks, Todd, and for the generous repair offer. These are Arcane "69 Experience" pickups and are lacquer potted. So I'm concerned about trying to unwind the wire ... I considered that if it breaks near or inside the windings that would be bad. I think I'm going to try the copper foil substrate approach and see if it can do that and solder a "jumper" bit of wire to both ends of the broken wire. I've read that the heat of the solder can melt the wire coating to create a good connection. I'll keep you posted .. and thanks again for the advice. Greg

you can try using isopropyl alcohol to soften the laquer potting if you want to try pulling some of the wire off the bobbin. Once you reassemble you can paint some shellac over the wires to "repot" them.

Got it connected. Used the copper foil and solder “blob” procedure. The lacquer coated wire was difficult, and I was terrified of breaking the wire coming off the bobbin, so I just turned the soldering iron down to just above solder melting temperature and kept lightly scraping it and then flowed solder between the two wires to create the connection.
Todd - many thanks for the advice!
