I want to drop a Metro loop into my Z28 mk2. Can it be done? I know a lot of you here feel that it doesn't need a loop but I'm asking if it can it be done, also would Dr. Z do it?

I’m sure it could be done. Not sure the shop would do it having already tried it with no real difference in the build design. But why don’t you just contact them?

The early prototypes of this amp had one. It will slightly change the tone, and not necessarily for the better. We don't offer this mod presently because we found it's not necessary. The headroom of the EF-86 is more than enough to get a clear, usable signal through even when FX are placed in front of the input, just turn your FX mix down lower than you typically would if you are playing with the amp overdriven.
Trust us when we say, we tried it, it's not worth the effort in this particular amp.

It's the overdrive of the ef86 that I am trying to have come before the delay but it is what it is.

My prototype has the FX Loop and I don’t use it. Everything sounds fantastic in front of it.

It's the overdrive of the ef86 that I am trying to have come before the delay but it is what it is. Understood, but you aren't hearing the EF-86 overdrive. That's what I'm referring to when I mention it's headroom. You are actually hearing the EF-86 signal overdriving the power section (mostly the phase inverter but the power tubes do add some flavor to that). This is why when you raise the controls above noon, they start to induce some distortion, that's the tone controls allowing the full signal of the EF-86 through, slamming the PI and starting to get it to break up. Since a traditional internal FX loop comes before the phase inverter (it has to), adding a loop really brings nothing to the equation other than another insert point. If you are dead set on getting the most pristine of effects post all the overdrive goodness of the amp, I would suggest a Fryette Power Stage which is essentially a reamping device that allows you to insert FX post the speaker level. On top of being an attenuator.

That is the beauty of the post phase inverter master volume, you get that growl and overdrive from the phase inverter. I never realized how much of the ‘cranked amp overdrive’ is the phase inverter! Game changer for sure, and the EF86 in the Z28 drives it real nice.
