Have any of you ever put on a new set of strings and had strange harmonics/overtones? I put some EB Extra Super Slinkies on my LP Jr. and the B and E strings sound funny. Almost like fret buzz but all the way up the neck. Mostly the B string but the E does it too down by the nut, but they all sound kind of off.
I'm going to put a different set on and see what happens. I usually run D'Addarios but I had the EB's sitting around and decided to try them.

I'm still curious if anybody else has seen this, but it's resolved. I had a bad set of strings, after chasing my tail for a long time I changed them and all's good. Brand new strings!
It reminds me of when I was working my way through college, fixing color TVs and VCRs. I had a Sony Trinitron that had only a horizontal line across the middle of the screen. To the tech that means no Vertical Sweep. So I went through it, found a bad 10uF electrolytic cap, and put a new one in. No better. So I chased my tail around that circuit for another hour or two and finally pulled out the brand new cap I had put in, and put another brand new one in. Voila! It was perfect.
Moral of the story: You can't be sure that a brand new (whatever) is good just because it's new. And that's what happened to me yesterday and this morning...I trusted that new strings were not and could not be the problem. But they were.

no doubt ... many times I've had brand new (bad) tubes and brand new (bad) car/motorcycle batteries. Glad it was just strings.

Can’t say I’ve ever run into that. But, it’s good to now keep in mind.
Gotta love the cap story. Now that, I’m sure I’ve run into while fixing something. It does put you in circles because your mind says the right thing was done and that you’re missing something else that you should know.

I have had issues like that but it was always on the wound string, not on the plain strings. I would just put on new strings to fix it.

Dave, those strings could be worth a fortune on Reverb. “Rare, Special Edition EB Slinkys with Extended Harmonics and Overtones”. $99.95/set.

Like Paul, i've had the issue with wound strings as well. could have been a bad wound string that was resonating sympathetically if you weren't muting it when picking the E or B string. can't imagine what would make a plain E or B string bad.

A couple of my amplifiers that have no negative feedback, definitely bring forward crazy sounds like that sometimes, but I just love those amps, and I’ll never buy anything else
