Hi, I figured this forum would be a great place to find out…anyone here know of the PT in a Hammond Ao35 will take a 5u4’s current draw? Thanx!

Hi, I figured this forum would be a great place to find out…anyone here know of the PT in a Hammond Ao35 will take a 5u4’s current draw? Thanx! I will answer this question with a bit of trepidation . First 35 years ago I tried to get the spec's on the PT used in the Hammond Reverb amp P/N HA 35 , and Hammond would not supply them to me. I was told it was a discontinued product and no data was readily available. I assume the 5V Rectifier IF value must be at lease 2.0 Amps to satisfy the 5Y3's requirements. The 5U4 rectifier needs an IF value of 3.0 Amps. It is my assumption that the original PT's used in the HA-35 is only 2.0 amp . The 5Y3 is the ideal rectifier for the HA-35 / Carmen Ghia , all of the power supply, fixed Phase Inverter voltages , and bias designs are calculated for the 5Y3 output voltage. Trying a 5U4 will only increase plate voltage, so it will slightly increase output Wattage, at the cost of the unique power supply design and cathode bias setting and over heat the PT. It maybe a bit louder , but not better. DR.Z

Ha! I’m not very good at navigating this forum yet! I’m replying to DrZ to thank him for his reply to my question. I’m the OP. I won’t be using a 5u4 in the AO35 Ghia! I have no complaints whatsoever with the Ghia. I was just curious about the PTX specs as far as the rectifier current is concerned. My Ao35 was an 18 watt lite in its last incarnation. I used a GZ34 a couple time with it and it improved the amp’s performance and response but I wasn’t satisfied with it overall. I rebuilt it into a Ghia and it’s one of my favorite amps now. I use a 50 watt (Ted) Weber blue dog Alnico with it mostly. Also like a WGS Invader 50 watt with it as well. Thanx again Doc!
