Hi friends, first post here!
I'm hoping to replace a vintage Super Reverb. Love it to death but it's A. too loud and B. too large and heavy. A few people pointed me in the direction of the EZG-50 head (probably would use it with a 2x10 cab) but I'm not sure what the difference would be to the Cure (with 10's instead of 12's), or if there's another Fender inspired amp I'm missing, etc. To complicate it further, I like my SR on 7.5-8.5, so I'm definitely looking for gainier American sounds (think Phillip Sayce, Jimmy Herring, etc) but with some more volume flexibility (not expecting a bedroom amp but I play a wide range of venues). I'm wondering if anyone has compared the EZG + 10's to a vintage Super and what your thoughts were? Am I looking in the wrong direction here? I wish there was one nearby to test but I can't find one, so any and all thoughts are most welcome.
Thanks!

While your speaker and cabinet choice will be a big factor I can say that the EZG-50 is generally much cleaner and has more head room than a Fender Blackface Super Reverb. And it's louder. If you think a Super Reverb is too loud, I don't think you will be happier with the EZG-50. For the same degree of breakup/compression, the EZG-50 will be louder than the Super Reverb. You didn't say what year your Super is. If you have a Silverface, I'm not personally familiar but they might be closer to the EZG-50 than the Blackface as far as volume and headroom, I'm really not sure. The EZG-50 does have the two volumes, Pre and Post. You can use the Post like a Master Volume and turn the Pre up but that's not the way I use mine, I like it pretty clean and I use a Tube Screamer type pedal to get more compression and breakup/overdrive. I'm probably not helping much.

Welcome to the forum. I also had a 65 and 66 SR and currently have an EZG with the MKII mods. Cleaner and louder with much tighter bass and the ability to un-scoop the mids. I found the pre-mod pre\post controls were more of a tone shaping thing than a traditional pre\post control setup for gain vs clean. The MKII addition of the master volume really made all of the difference to me and the voicing changes made it much more like my old BF SRs than before (speakers and cab not withstanding). I only play clean so I can't speak to the gainier side of the EZG. The EZG is a pretty clean amp at heart. I would guess that the EZG MKII is the closest thing to a BFSR you will find in Doc's lineup though.

Thanks for your thoughts, my super is pretty gainy as I did a couple mods to get more gain out of it (pulled the V1 tube, replaced the PI with a 12AX7, disconnected the trem) so I'm guessing the EZG is going to be too clean for what I'm looking for.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for a ZLux

My EZG sounds great with a 2x10 cab, and the PPIMV mod makes it super volume friendly. I really love it with an Alnico Creamback 1x12 too. Such a great sound. You can set up a lot of different drive flavors with the Pre/Post/PPIMV combination. I have a Silverface Super Reverb and I can get really close to the tone and response with my EZG. Hope that helps.

Z-Lux. Fender sound, smaller, less weight, and you can push the lesser wattage at gig level.

Z-Lux. Fender sound, smaller, less weight, and you can push the lesser wattage at gig level. Totally agree. The half power, the master volume, and the weight reduction are all there. And, you get an amazing tone and a well built machine that you can pass down for generations.

Nothing finer than a cranked super imo. If a z-lux is anything like a fender deluxe i’m not so sure it would be a good swap for someone used to playing a super on 7-8. Nice amps but near the headroom or the punch of a super.

Nice amps but near the headroom or the punch of a super. The Z-Lux a bit different in the power amp section than a Deluxe or Deluxe Reverb. It has four 6V6 that are cathode biased instead of fixed biased as compared to the Deluxe’s two 6V6.It also most likely has different negative feedback circuit if any, so the output would be louder than a Deluxe. I wasn’t able to play one loud, but the Z-Lux definitely had mojo.
