I have been a fender guy since the mid 1970s for both guitars and amps. With one Hiwatt/SoundCity in the mix in 1978. So now I have a Z-28 MKII, a Gretsch 6120, and a pedal board of new to me pedals. This is very different, what a learning curve!! The Tone to me is at mid range 12:00 at the 9:00pm setting bass and treble, after 11:00 the gain starts to set in. I really had to sit down and explore to get to a familiar starting point. However, This amp is a chimey dream once you get familiar with the controls. Had to replace the stock EF-86 as it was micro phonic/rattley upon arrival. That tube was producing some other worldly noise! LOL. All is well and I'm really digging the amp!

Such a great amp. I was familiar with the Docs EF86 preamp coming in. I am at 12 on bass, 1 o'clock on the treb and 12 on the volume. Master to taste.

If you want to make it even better get 2x12 Dr. Z oval open back cabinet and put a Alnico Creme and a 75 watt Creamback H Magnet Ceramic in parallel 8ohm and it comes alive even more.
