I've owned 3 of these, and all 3 have been modded by AM.
I'm thinking of putting together a small board for fun with all-stock Boss pedals. I already have a couple DD-2's, a BF-2 Flanger, and a Pedaltrain Mini to be the host board.
Anyone have or use a SD-1 non-modded? Thoughts?
I'm thinking of a couple drives, a modulation and a delay (maybe a 'verb). 4-5 pedals max.

For me, unmodded they are super bright pedals (read piercing highs). The trick someone who used them all the time gave me was, to roll the tone back all the way or almost all the way.

I've had one for 20+ years. Rehearsals, jam session....anything where I don't want/need a full pedalboard? I take the SD-1. it's still a little mid heavy, but useable.

Got a brand new SD1 today. I find it very similar to a TS....maybe not quite the mid bump but definitely there. I've heard Dan and Mick on TPS say there are more similarities between the two than differences and I agree.
I also agree with Marc in that it has a lot of highs on board unless you dial back that Tone knobby. Even doing so it doesn't really get to what I consider "dark", just less trebly.
I'm going to keep it though. It'll find a place on my all-Boss board.

In my opinion, it's one of the Boss pedals that's pretty good "as-is," no mods needed. And they're so cheap, too (comparatively to most other pedals, that is)!
I've had a Keeley 5-star modded one in the past (I didn't even use it in the heavily-modded mode) and then in more recent years I'd picked up another stock one. Its core tone, for what it is meant to do, is actually quite good right out of the factory.

UPDATE.....I put the stock SD against an AM modded SD (808) and a Prince of Tone. Primary goal is a lead drive....think gain around 2 o'clock. I was able to get virtually the same tones from all three....nice thick mid drive that I like from KOT/POT pedals. Interestingly the AM SD has less volume than the stock one. Not a big deal and fixed with a twist of the Level knob.
I would have zero concerns gigging with the stock SD-1. Yeah it's fun using a KOT on the gig, but as their value continues to rise, it's nice to know that a simple SD-1 can do an admirable job as a substitute.

I have the SD-1W. The toggle switch gives it back a little lost low end if that's your thing. They claim it's less noisey than the standard version. Really great pedal. I also have a Boss DM-2W analog delay and RV-6 reverb on a little board with it. I think Boss pedals get overlooked, but they make good stuff. The reverb and delay are really excellent.

I've got two of the SD-1s. One I modded with different switchable clipping diodes, the other one bone stock. I've always liked it. Must be a reason it's still in production after all these years.
