I play through a Z-Plus I purchased new a few years ago. Recently I've had issues with varying volume levels while playing and thought there may be an issue with my amp, but I disconnected the Variable Boost pedal (original version) and the problem went away.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'd really like to upgrade to the new version. Any opinions on old style versus new style?
Thanks,
Craig

It's most likely a dirty pot or jack. My Cure came with the old style boost pedal and I replaced it with the new style so I'd have an LED. The only benefits are the LED and replaceable cord (though that's another jack to get dirty).
The sound is exactly the same, though the potentiometer taper is slightly different. I have the boost set around 11:00 now and it was set a little over noon with the old pedal for the same amount of boost. This may be due to tolerances or different brands of potentiometers.

try cleaning the cable and jack as mentioned above.
Get some electronics cleaner and spray it on a lint free cloth. Wipe down the plug end. Then get the plug wet and insert it into the jack and few times. Wipe it down again and repeat.
If that doesn't clear it up plug in the cable, grab the cable behind the plug and wiggle it around and see if your issue comes and goes. Do the same thing where the cable goes into the switch box.

Also try cleaning the pot. Open the unit up and spray Deoxit or other cleaner into the pot near the stem. Rotate the pot back and forth for a few turns. The cleaner will evaporate. It should help.

Thanks, Craig The reason why we went to a removable cable for the new version is that the old version had a low quality cable, and it's the most common point of failure on these switches. If you are experiencing a fluctuation in volume while it's plugged in, it's likely there in intermittency in the cable that is causing it to lose connection. You can either purchase a new version (Chicago Music Exchange often stocks them), or replace the cable with a jack (just solder a TS jack) and connect the wires where the cable are coming from the switch to each lug of the jack.
