Need some help with my Remedy. Bought it to use in an 80’s arena rock band who has a pretty ham-fisted drummer, so I need loads of clean headroom. So far the clean and crunch tones are amazing, the problem is it’s out of gas. Using an SPL meter and some pink noise to basically get things all behaving as closely as possible, the Maz and Route 66 are all proving to have at least 4 to 5db more headroom before I can hear any grit or hair on top of a single coil clean tone, and the EMS is even cleaner yet, with not even the hint of hair or grit starting in. Now I have to admit that I bought the Remedy used so I probably should’ve checked to see if the previous owner installed higher gain tubes, but I figured I would ask you guys first. That said, is it normal for the Remedy preamp to break up so early, or do you believe I have high gain preamp tubes and/or bias out of whack?

The Remedy that I had for a while sure seemed to have a lot of clean headroom especially with single coils. I even utilized 5881 tubes for a while for more headroom. I'll be interested to hear what others say.

My non master version remains very clean with a les Paul (paf type output pickups) at what I would call high volume (louder than drums). If it was me, I'd send it in to get checked out and then rest assured the amp will be like new. Comparing to the maz38nr2, my remedy is louder/cleaner with the les Paul. Besides what you mention with the preamp tubes, the "out of gas" statement implies maybe weak power tubes. And fwiw, my remedy is 14 years old with what looks like the original tubes (bought used as well).

I always replace tubes in used amps that I buy, consider it part of the purchase price. Now a days though, that’s a little tougher even with JJs (which are fine tubes BTW). Well, now that I have a tester I can test them first, just haven’t bought any amps in a long time. Next up is the CAZ.

Checked the tubes today.. All are stock, and seemingly in good condition. I did some searching through previous threads and found that a handful of guys prefer the Remedy with 5751 in V1 and/or for PI. I first tried one in V1 and it barely noticeable in reducing hair, so I added another in the PI position and the clean headroom came up considerably. What’s interesting is the volume did not just come down like many amps that I’ve tried to reduce gain with. Something must be different in the Remedy chain that lends itself to reducing hair but not volume, which is super cool. Anyway, I’ve just done all this today so I’m not going to say everything’s good now because we all know how that goes. Fingers crossed, but tomorrow’s another day. Either way, what a fantastic amp!

Good info there John. I'm taking note in case I need the cleans. So far I've been happy with the hairy little beast.
