Hi everyone,
Which do you prefer, open or closed? If it was a 1x12 cabinet, amp less than 50 watts, a mix of rock, country, blues, maybe mic'd, maybe not . . .
Thanks for your comments,

Open for my Wreck, DB4, and ZLux. But closed for a Marshall Plexi type amp

Yeah, American amps open, British closed back. Some exceptions, of course.

Generally an open cab will give you better stage volume… for outdoors, mic it and let the PA do the heavy lifting.

I always thought open back was good when you have a back wall to reflect off of. Outside that sound just disappears. 🤷♂️

I prefer closed back out doors unless there is an enclosure behind, then I prefer open back Todd

If I’m playing a gig with Marshall 4x12 and the stage has a wall behind or beside, I turn the cab backwards, pointing at the wall and crank it! Has a more open back tone. Also it doesn’t kill the crowd center stage, front row.

Lots of different thoughts on this topic. I've never quite made up my mind about it. If there's something behind the outdoor stage, then the open back does pretty well. If there's nothing very solid behind the stage, I'd be tempted to go closed back. Then again, my open back 1x12 combo on top of a closed 1x12 extension would be the best. Ignoring the soundman's comments . . .
But if you could only bring a 1x12 box for about 35 watts, not much of a wall behind the amp, what to do?
Thanks for the replies,
Swampcooler

I use all my current amps with open back Z convertible cabinets. I converted to closed back to see if I liked it thinking it would be good for reducing stage volume and would be less likely to get frequency cancellations due to whether there was a wall, drape or nothing behind them. I didn't care for the change in sound/feel. I suppose I could get used to the changes, but really like how my amps respond with open back. I'm sure there are amps that I would like better using closed back, but my current gigging amps will remain open, regardless of where I play.

I use the Z convertible, and I have been going back and forth, open and closed. It's a bit congested closed up, and on the other hand, the open back is almost like a port, increasing the dimension of the low end. I've got some outdoor gigs lined up starting in May so I'm trying to get my outdoor stage rig together. Lot's of good insight here, thanks.

Do yourself a favor (and your bandmates and FOH guy) and just get used to getting a sound open back. If the monitoring is sub par, they can still hear you and perform decently as a unit. Signed, the old guy with 5 4x12's who has tried practically everything.

It still depends on the stage...what's behind you (and how close), what tone you're going for, how good is the monitor system... Etc...
But like rockerfeller said... Usually open back unless plexi tones are desired.
