So on my way to Miami today I stop off at MAE to grab some picks. I decide to go into the back room and the moment I walked into the room I felt like there was a halo right over this amp...it was just saying to me "Try me, trust me, just try me"...so I followed my instincts and I did. I picked up a Gibson Les Paul and was honestly blown away. Guys, I have been on a search for almost 2 years now for the right amp for me, and I believe I have found the Wizard of Oz. I have quite a few questions before I pull the trigger.... 1. Okay, well the guitar that I own is a Heritage H335 semi-hollow guitar with 2 59 pickups...I know this guitar is much different than a Les Paul, but do you think my guitar will sound great or just as great as the Les Paul throught it? 2. It was a 2X10 with reverb...should I stick with that or should I look for something better? 3. The main tones that I am aiming for are John Scofield(newer stuff, like last 5 or 6 years), Scott Henderson, Jimmy Herring, Trey Anastasio, and Robben Ford. I know these are a lot of different kind of tones, but it seemed to be very versatile, do you think I can get these tones? 4. I own a Deluxe Reverb Reissue and use it with a zendrive, and sometimes dig the tone, but a lot of the times not...how will these 2 amps differ? Is the Maz Jr better? 5. I will be using this amp for a lot of Jazz stuff, including Bebop, like in combo class and big band in my college...good choice?
I know that's a lot of questions...but I thought I would just get them all out of the way, so I don't have to ask again. Thank you so much!!!!

The other guitarist in my band played Gibson 335's through a MAZ 18 2/10 and he had Heritage 335's (Killer Guitars) and never sounded better, I don't think you will get the sparkling cleans that you get from the Deluxe but the MAZ will come close, getting back to the other guitarist in my band's MAZ18, well I was so impressed with this amp that it is now mine. I think what made me pull the trigger was one night I was in the studio and I plugged a Strat into the MAZ, that did it.

That would be a great amp unless you're looking for more clean headroom to come out over the orchestra with clean chords. I think it's a much better amp than the DRRI but overall not a lot louder. You can swap V! for a little more clean.

Thanks for the helpful replys! Guitargeorge, can you describe the kind of cleans and overdrive sounds he could get with his heritage? Also, billyguitar, doesn't this amp have lots of headroom?! And can it get pretty close to doing the dumble clean thing? If anyone can answer my original questions, that would be awsome! Thanks.

....just go 4 it...your instints are correct. I studied and serched for 2 years, ended up buying my Z without even hearing it or ever trying one. It is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Your lucky...in most states, you cant walk into a store and try one, because as soon as they come in...there sold and out the door.will it sound good with your guitar? damn straight it will. Chip

Sorry, I didn't see this question earlier about doing a 'Dumble' clean thing. No Dumbles in my little world so I wouldn't know. I wouldn't say any 18 watt amp has lots of clean headroom. My clean headroom standards are Fender Twin and a wonderful little Evans amp, which is kind of a better Polytone. Like i said earlier the clean headroom on a Maz jr would be about the same as a Deluxe Reverb, if the speakers were the same. The Maz jr will sound better (to me) with sweeter highs and stronger lows than the DRRI. In general, more watts is more clean. The Maz sr would be better in that regard. It also depends on what kind of band/orchestra gig you do. I've done orchestra pit things where it was all chords and no solos and a Maz jr would do that okay but if you're wanting to solo with a clean tone over a swing orchestra you'll need a Maz 38 at least.

Okay, well the guitar that I own is a Heritage H335 semi-hollow guitar with 2 59 pickups...I know this guitar is much different than a Les Paul, but do you think my guitar will sound great or just as great as the Les Paul throught it? I was by MAE today on my lunch hour to see Seth. I played the Heritage H535 (Was it yours?) hanging on the wall in the back room, as well as a Vintage Les Paul and SG through the same Blonde MAZ Jr 18 with 2-10s. I have owned a MAZ 38 Sr with 1-12 I bought there about a year ago from Tommy Sal. I've bought a lot of gear from those guys in the past 15 years. I tried just about every amp known to man before I bought the MAZ Sr (I even bought a couple including a Vibro King), but nothing compared to the Dr Z. I too own an H535 with Seth Lovers, as well as a 56 RI Les Paul, several Strats and Teles. Every guitar sounds terrific through this amp. If you are looking for a Jazz amp with a Scott Henderson, Robben Ford twist, go for the MAZ Sr w/1-12, as it will give you the headroom you need and break up with a smoother distortion than the Jr. You can put a pedal in front (I use a Sparkle Drive) to drive the amp and it will clean up when you roll the volume back a bit.2. It was a 2X10 with reverb...should I stick with that or should I look for something better? Refer to above. A 2-10 amp tends to be brighter and I find it to be an acquired taste. have you ever played through a Silver Face Princeton? To my ears that's the tone range.3. A lot of your output depends on the pedals/effects you use, as well as you're playing abilities. I work with many professionals and they can play through a Crate Solid State amp and still sound phenomenal! 4. I own a Deluxe Reverb Reissue and use it with a zendrive, and sometimes dig the tone, but a lot of the times not...how will these 2 amps differ? Is the Maz Jr better? The Maz Jr or Sr are both way better than the Fender. Comparatively, the MAZ series has better tone across the board and you have more control over the point the amp begins to break up.5. I will be using this amp for a lot of Jazz stuff, including Bebop, like in combo class and big band in my college...good choice? Again, I suggest you compare the MAZ Sr to the Jr before making a purchase. For your style, I think you'll be happier with the 12" Celestion speaker.I know that's a lot of questions...but I thought I would just get them all out of the way, so I don't have to ask again. Thank you so much!!!! You can email me at jfelser@comcast.net if you want to get additional info.

Here's a link to a video I did with my Yamaha archtop into my Maz 18: media.putfile.com/Black-OrpheusI never intended this for the net at the time, just wanted to see what I looked like playing guitar (wanted to eventually do some videos for my son to have of his old man when I'm gone). It may be useful to you though. It was recorded through the mic on the old camera (VHS - pre-digital) so it's not great but passable I think. The tune is Black Orpheus. I find the guitar feeds back before the sound gets dirty so it has enough clean for me. A Maz 38 would allow more clean volume if the archtop wouldn't feed back though.
