I've got a really old Shure PGX4 wireless and I want to upgrade to a better system.
I want a transmitter that doesn't just plug into the guitar jack and hang there. I much prefer one that clips to my guitar strap and is wired from there, and I want to mount the receiver on my pedal board.
Can someone recommend a good, reliable system for me?

I have used the same Line6 G50 for about 7 years. It works great and can clip on to your belt or guitar strap. THE ONLY issue with it is the connection where you plug the guitar cable into the pack. It's kind of weak and made out of plastic. Twice, I've knelt down to change something on the pedal board, and got the cable under my foot somehow. When I stood up, I broke the plastic plug on the pack. But I taped the cable to it and have never had an issue with it not working. I bought a used pack off to replace the broken one, and proceeded to break that one too.
The receiver is very small and can sit right on your pedal board. YMMV.

I've been using the Shure GLXD16 for several years with no issues. I like that it's "pedal oriented" (like the Line6 model above) so that the receiver is on my board to reduce the distance (however marginally) from the transmitter on my belt. I used to use a Shure rack mount, and before that a Sennheiser rack mount, and they were fine but using up the rack space wasn't ideal for my purposes. The ta4f connector (which all theses systems seem to use -- the mini 4-pin xlr type connector) screws onto the body pack to ensure a firm connection. It's rechargeable. Shure GLXD16

My Shure GLXD16 had a lot of dropouts, even if I wasn't far from the receiver. Plus they don't make that particular model anymore. However, there is a replacement in the GLXD16+ that hopefully improves on the original model.
I've been using the Line6 G50 with good luck and it has a clip. You can also buy pouches to mount to your guitar strap for pretty much any wireless transmitters. The key to the G50 is to put the transmitter on RF2. In RF1 mode I still got a lot of dropouts, but RF2 mode does something and I haven't had a problem since. Although, I wouldn't mind trying a Shure that transmits on UHF to avoid any potential future issues.

Yep - with any wireless WHERE you use it seems to have more impact than how far you roam (unless you want to run around the arena). I mainly use mine just for the convenience of not having a cable under my feet, so I’m never more than 10-20 ft away, at most, and usually about 5-8 feet.
A noisy environment with other items competing for the same freq will impact dropouts and such greatly, in my experience. Or if you have several band mates on wireless in the same spectrum.

What's up with the Line 6 and the "Cable Tone" thing? I'm sure it's just a low pass filter, and it seems like you could get the same effect by rolling the treble down a little. Do you find it useful or gimmicky?
And, have you used it with NiMh rechargeable batteries? I use them with my Shure transmitter and they've worked great.

Do you find it useful or gimmicky? For me, the "Cable Tone" didn't cut enough highs in one position, then too many in the next. I read on the interweb that some people put a capacitor between the tip and sleeve on the plug that simulates the capacitance of whatever cable you would normally use and like, if you weren't using a wireless. I found this works really well.

I don't use it. Not sure how it impacts the sound. But with a loud drummer, bass guitar and two Dr.Z amps blasting away, I doubt ANYBODY could hear a difference. And I use mine exclusively with rechargeable batteries. I change them out every show although, I can use them for two 3 set shows without issue.

I have the original GLXD system and it's worked well for me for quite a while. It replaced a Line 6 G30 which had too many dropouts (plus the GLX has an excellent built-in tuner)

Had a Line 6 G30 and a G50 Relay and the G50 was much better. The Shure has been completely reliable for me and I like the strobe tuner function. Easy to see on bright stages and the mute function works great. The one idiosyncrasy I found with it is, use must use an adequate power supply. You will have problems if you don't use the supplied power supply or at least 400 ma from a quality Pedal Power or similar.

I use the original supply that came with the unit. It makes the bottom of the pedalboard more congested, but I think it's worth it. I don't want any power issues on such an important piece of gear.

Looks like it would be a good idea to wait for the new Shure GLXD16+ system, whenever that becomes available.

Dave, it’s in stock at musicians friend and Guitar Center right now. I want to add that I’ve had drop out problems with my Line6 G50 at big venues that use lots of wireless for their lighting. ILuvPunz has the shure GLXD 16 and he doesn’t have any issues. The G 50 is a problem a couple shows a year for me. But it’s enough, that I am upgrading this week to the Shure Glxd16+.

it looks like the GLXD16+ add 5.8ghz to the 2.4ghz ... that should improve performance (until everything else moves to the 5.8ghz band and we start over).

Their website says they expect some in to arrive "in months". I'm hoping they put that up months ago and not recently.

Yeah, I put in a request to be notified when they arrive at Sweetwater, but as of now I haven't heard from them. Ordered mine from GC, and after I placed the order I found out that they're in stock at my local GC. Of course, it was too late to change the order so instead of hands on right now, I've gotta wait till Wednesday. Oh well...as an aside, does anybody else get new gear fever?

I talked to my Sweetwater Rep today and he told me they’re getting more in June. So I ordered for musicians friend and I get mine on Wednesday.

Wait, you mean it goes away for some people? I thought it was a constant fever. As somebody who just bought a brand new Z28 combo and a new wireless system, I can say I never get gear fever.

The other thing that I like about the Shure GLXD16+ is it has an input for a guitar cable where the Line6 doesn't. In the past, when I had an intermittent issue with the G50 and had to bypass it, I lost my tuner. That's because my tuner was hooked up to the Aux out on the Line6 unit. By bypassing it, I'd have to play the whole set without a tuner. If it was a non-stop show, I had to play the show without a tuner (unless I wanted to stop the show to reconfigure my board). The Shure unit has a line in AND a built in tuner. So, IF that kind of thing ever happens, I can just plug the guitar into the Shure unit and go from there. That's a quick easy fix.
Of course, if I ran the tuner in line with all my other pedals, that wouldn't be much of an issue.
