Howdy,
Just ordered a solitary JJ 12Ax7 from The Tube Store ($23.) What's the reputation of JJ's 12Ax7 preamp tubes these days? Are there better alternatives in that price range?

They seem as reliable as any tube to me. There are some amps and positions that I don't think they're the best, but I use them where Doc recommends them and they sound great.

JJ makes several types of 12AX7, the long plate ECC803S, the short plate ECC83S and a ECC83MG. You can review the descriptions at Eurotubes out of Oregon. www.eurotubes.com/store/pc/preamp%20tube%20descriptions.htmI’ve tried them all and prefer the ECC83MG for my combo amp. I use the long plate 803S in my other amp head as they aren’t recommended for combo amps. I really like them. I’ve tried them versus several NOS 12AX7 and they hold their own. I’ve never had one fail or go microphonic. I also recommend Eurotubes as a source. Their customer service is excellent.

I will add though, the gold pin JJ's sounded very dull and muddy to me.

Howdy,
I accidentally ordered a JJ 12At7 instead of a 12aX7! Research confirms that they're basically interchangeable, so apparantly no harm done. This tube will be used as a back up in my trusty '68 Vibro Champ. The 12aT7's lower gain just might be a good thing, anyway. Thanks for all the replies.
P.S: I hope Dr. Zaite doesn't boot me from the forum for ordering the wrong tube!
