Stopped by my local shop for a few minutes and plugged into a Z 28 mk-II they had on the floor. Wow. Not a lot of gain on tap, but definitely had a lot of dimension to it. So tempted to sell my Z-Plus that doesn’t get used much these days and go for the Z28 MKII.

If you want gain with it throw a pedal in front. That amp loves pedals and will give you whatever you want from pedals.

I still get the grins when I plug into mine. It's just the best amp ever, and I have yet to find a pedal or guitar it doesn't love. It's the best amp I've ever gigged, too. So present and polished, but never harsh.

If the MkII is anything like the original, the preamp is very susceptible to signal strength. (how 'hot' the pickups are)...and that can be a very good thing.
I played my original version 28 with a tele that had vintage output pickups. And yes, it was difficult to get a lot of gain. Then I had someone plug in a Clapton strat with that mid boost circuitry, and the 28 couldn't get a clean tone. I had to tell him to turn off all that boost stuff.
The point is, the 28's preamp has a wide dynamic range. Low output pickups (or signal) will result in cleaner tones. Hot pickups or signal will result in lots of gain. Set your knobs accordingly.

You lost me at you "walked in to your local shop and PLUGGED in to a Z28 Mk II" How is that even possible? DO not share publicly where this store is located IF you want to buy it in the next day or two! But just for curiosity sake and no other reason*, what store did you find it at?

Remember, past noon on the EQ adds gain.

The best tone I ever had was outdoors with a Z-28 on 3-3-3 with a Gibson SG. My first gig of the year is Texas Independence Day, March 2, outdoors. I’m taking my Z-28 MKII and my SG.
